The new extension of the Colegio Marista la Merced-Fuensanta, in Murcia, Spain, by IH arquitectos is a new way of reinterpreting the original building, with the use of gentle treatment of the color range that gives the extension and, the entire complex, with a great personality.

Located on a trapezoidal plot in a corner of the school, the project does not dissociate itself from the original prismatic model but stands out from the rest, reflecting its strong presence.
The IH arquitectos propose a trapezoidal volume due to its plot but which in turn takes advantage of it by welcoming the outdoor space where children will play while being protected. In addition, the same project also envelops the interior with the use of color and slats that allow a soft play with the light inputs that allow the interior space to be configured in a different way.

The project has two levels and stands out for the color gradient it uses, standing out as an architectural intervention over the rest of the buildings in the environment as well as being a pleasant and familiar space for the children themselves.

Project description by IH arquitectos

The new Marista's Nursery School arises from the need to provide a new space for kids in the School in order to improve the facilities, the efficiency and the school organization. This will provide an improvement on its functionality and usability as well.

The project is located in the same place of the old nursery school, on a trapezoidal plot adjacent to Avenue Juan de Borbon. This irregular form and the city zoning requirements define the volume and the position of the building which achieves an optimal exploitation.

The school’s new volume requires both natural light access and management, due to the building functional requirements.

Attending to these requirements, the building is generated by a plane that covers the interior volume and it is vertically enclosed by a system of louvers that indicate the interior program through a color gradient. These louvers regulate the flow of light and people, as well as the shaping of the singular and contemporary facade of this new building.
