The Portuguese architecture firm nu.ma, led by Nuno Silva and Maria Fonseca, has designed a multifunctional building in the city of Agueda, part of the Aveiro district, 72 km from Porto, Portugal.

The new building, which is organized on two floors, in an area of 3200 m², has program which has been splitted in three different areas: exhibition, offices, warehouse.
The proposal, designed by nu.ma, starts as a rectangular shape with the dimensions of 100m x 32m, inserted in a non-regular shape plot.

The building is organized in two floors. The public access is located in the ground floor, with the exhibition area and the warehouse. The first floor, designated as private zone, is the area where the office zone and bar-canteen are located.

Description of project by nu.ma

The lot where the project is inserted has a non-regular shape, perpendicular to EN333 in Agueda, Portugal.

Taking in account the regulations and municipality rules, the building was inserted to respect this rules and take in account the maximum permitted area to build.

Taking in account the regulation, the rectangular shape form was re-shaped to respect all the specifications.

In terms of the program and taking in account the particularity of the functionality of the company, the architects noticed that the project needed to be built in two floors.

In the same logic, the program needed to be split in 3 different areas: exhibition; offices; warehouse.

The building is organized in Ground floor with the public access, the exhibition area and the controlled warehouse, were the exhibition is located near the principal road (EN.333) and the warehouse in the back of the terrain (with a secondary entrance).

On the first floor, the private zone of the company and with restrict access, were is located the office zone and bar-canteen.

As a way of supporting these two areas, an outdoor platform (terrace) was created on the 1st floor. This area made it possible to create a dematerialization in the initial cobblestone.

Concerning the height of the building and because it has 9 meters high, the studio decided to split the facade in 3 parts (2,5m; 2,5m; 4m). This also served to establish some rules regarding the design of windows, doors, etc.

Regarding the materiality of the building, they simplify all the structural system. All the building is in corrugated sheet, and in the exhibition area they assumed a transparency of the building that brings the connection of the building it self with the public.
