The jury of the X Iberoamerican Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BIAU) has awarded Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura and other 26 works, 6 books, two periodical publications and a collection of videos in which has been one of the most busy editions of this international event. In this edition, the tenth, curated by Spanish architects Ángela García de Paredes e Ignacio G. Pedrosa with Alvaro G. Puntoni, deputy commissioner in Sao Paulo, there have been a total of 1,111 works intended to show the print that people have left in the cities and the territory as a result of migrations and other movements. Hence the theme of this edition is "Displacements / Dislocations".
The international jury, meeting in Madrid on 1 and 2 April, awards Souto de Moura from among 21 other nominations in order to recognize a "full of emotion" work and "the important contribution of his teaching in universities in different countries". It has also valued the bid submitted by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, the "enriching relationships between different scales, times and places" that his work has developed, and the ability to experiment with new materials and structures.
In parallel, the Jury Panorama has reviewed 194 proposals shortlisted by national committees in 21 countries, reaching a total of 26 winning entries located in Argentina (2), Mexico (2), Portugal (4), Ecuador (2) Paraguay (2), Brazil (4), Uruguay (1), Colombia (1), Chile (1) and Spain (7). The winning works are mainly architectural and among them there are public buildings as cultural centers, theaters and museums and houses of different types and even a stable. The jury has also selected as finalists 28 other works.
In the category of publications they have been presented 160 books, 61 periodicals and 25 publications in other media (video), and the high quality of the works has led the jury to award ex aequo, six books and two periodical publications. The books address different issues related to Latin American architectural culture from various approaches, from history to architectural criticism, urban culture or research territory. The winners from Portugal, Spain, Peru, Argentina and Mexico are works by academic and independent publishers. The prize also includes nine other books as finalists.
The periodical publications awarded ex aequo are two magazines (one Brazilian and one Spanish), while a third (Spanish) has received a special mention from the jury. In the first two, it has been valued the effort "to promote eras, characters and works of the Brazilian architectural culture" , in the case of Monolith Magazine, and the value of "the work of social awareness towards architecture" for the supplement El Cultural (from the Spanish newspaper El Mundo).
The winning entry in the category of Other Media has been the Masters collection of the Arquia Foundation for their interviews with Rafael Moneo, Ricardo Bofill, Manuel Gallego, Oriol Bohigas and Antonio Fernández Alba.
Soon the results of the Jury of PhD theses will be published. In this category 108 proposals for Latin American universities have been presented.
