"The video depicts a character, perhaps a machine, perhaps human once, maybe still. Stuck in the grind of an endless routine. All they need is a chance, a glitch that sparks an awakening. What follows is an internal conflict to see who, or what will come out on top."
Moriarty and Auborn explain.
British duo John Matthias and Jay Auborn's explorations of human-robotic bonds – here, creating a mini electronic symphony born of experiments with a robot drummer – see choreographer Anthony Missen use broken and repeated movements to show a connected loss of humanity. with the tedium of an existence absorbed by machines.
"The tech isn’t particularly unique, and there are several products and home-made setups that use solenoids to play instruments or which are used in installations, for example. We were focused more on the creative implications and possibilities."
Moriarty and Auborn explain.
