A duo of artists who investigate the formal possibilities of a traditional genre such as still lifes, together they present a contemporary vision that questions the limits of painting, photography and new media. The exhibition is part of the programme Déjà vu? curated by Susan Bright.
The National Museum of Romanticism is taking part in PHotoESPAÑA 2019 with the exhibition Otra mirada: Sharon Core and Laura Letinsky, included in the programme curated by Susan Bright which, under the title ¿Déjà Vu?, presents a selection of works that draw on the artistic and photographic traditions of the past to create works that are absolutely relevant in the present. Bright encourages the viewer to reflect on how the photographs act rather than what they show.
Another look is made up of eleven photographs by Sharon Core and Laura Letinsky, whose work is based on a great deal of knowledge of Art History and classical and contemporary culture, raising a sophisticated questioning of the photographic medium and still life as a genre.
In Sharon Core's work we find reproductions of still lifes of flowers that the author recreates in her studio through the images she finds on the Internet or in art books. Thus, more than a simple copy, these works also imply a reflection on the role of photography in the comprehension and visualization of painting, since there is no direct knowledge of the original work of art.
On the other hand, Laura Letinsky's photographs can also be considered still lifes, incorporating cuttings from trend, advertising or artistic magazines, mixing them with objects and reproductions. In this sense, they are reflections on desire and consumption, challenging the spectator to reflect on how we see and experience objects.
With this exhibition, open until 22 September, the Romanticism Museum, part of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, is once again taking part in the PHotoESPAÑA festival, an unavoidable event for this museum, as it is devoted to the 19th century, the birth of photography.
