Linazasoro & Sánchez win the competition to remodel Mauriac square

The Mauriac square, a small sub-prefecture of the former Auvergne region, is a palimpsest hidden beneath a rigid layout presided over by a monument to the dead of the First World War. A space saturated with traffic. The boundaries of the square are made up of a Romanesque church, a town hall from the first half of the 19th century, with a neoclassical layout, and a group of houses, including one from the 12th century. Under the square are the ruins of the church of an ancient medieval monastery that was destroyed during the Revolution. 

The project seeks to enhance the whole of this set of elements that make up the history of the square, also bringing to light the trace of the ruins and introducing a fountain that recalls the existence of a primitive and articulates two levels within the space. The pavements, differentiated by their link to the different stages of construction of the square from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, are represented by the "calade" of medieval origin or the large neoclassical slabs, thus contributing to highlight and articulate this palimpsest.
