MACH transforms one of the old dwellings in Mataró to give light to A29 Unstable. A narrow and fragmented space, with hardly any lighting or ventilation, is transformed into a luminous room thanks to the elimination of partitions and furniture that accompanies the elongated morphology of the building.

After eliminating the wall that divided the day rooms and treating the façades, replacing the small windows with large windows and adding a new skylight in the room, all of this harmonised with light-coloured furniture, manages to make the interior a much brighter space than the previous one.

The MACH project is distributed by placing the services and storage in a central core, thus freeing up the façades, in one of them the bedroom is located, and in the other, the terrace window, illuminates the living room, dining room and kitchen. Thanks to this strategy, what were previously individual divisions now work together to compose a continuous flow of space.

The central piece of concrete is the protagonist of the studio, supported by the red shoring that now fulfils the function of the previous load-bearing wall, it manages to enhance the continuity of the dwelling while at the same time offering itself as a meeting point. The exterior courtyards are clad in glazed ceramic in reddish tones to match the joinery.

Description of project by MACH

Between the hill of Cerdanyola and the Verador beach, the city of Mataró is organised around the old streams and torrents. In its streets, residential buildings from the beginning of the 20th century, characterised by their level of self-construction and continuous transformations, coexist with an industrial fabric from the beginning of the century.

The A29 studio is the result of a new transformation of a flat located in a typical building of the area between dividing walls and with elongated proportions. The space had a fragmented layout, the result of several extensions and renovations, with small rooms and little natural light and ventilation.

The proposal consists of seeking a strategy that organises and enhances the spaces in order to obtain as much light as possible. It is proposed to concentrate a core of services and storage in the centre of the floor plan, in order to place the bedrooms, dining room, living room and kitchen on the façade.

One of the main interventions consists of demolishing the wall of the old façade, which divided the living room from the kitchen and dining room, as well as the extension of the old gallery, in order to defragment the space and achieve an open and luminous space. In this space, a central concrete piece is proposed, suspended from the new shoring structure, as the only piece of furniture that forms part of the building and that takes centre stage in the space and generates a meeting place.

Finally, the studio situated at the back of the plot and with external access is connected and visually linked to the flat through a new skylight and a patio clad in glazed ceramic.

MACH is an architecture studio based in Madrid and Barcelona, due to the symbiosis between Laia Gelonch (1991) and Marc Subirana (1990). Gelonch and Subirana combine their professional work with research and teaching, teaching at the ETSAB of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and at the La Salle School of Architecture.

The studio is committed to an architecture that pays attention to detail and is well conceived, with a careful yet optimistic project methodology. The practice puts the relationship between space and program in the foreground, carefully approaching each project. The studio's work covers different sectors and scales, seeking new creative opportunities.
