Spanish architecture firms MACH (led by Laia Gelonch Llongarrium, Marc Subirana Ribera) and IDEA (led by Carlos Maristany Ortiz, Luis Bellera Fernández de la Cruz, Eduardo Palao Valverde) won the Žatec architectural competition for a new sports hall, which will be used mainly for ball games.

Žatec is a small town in Louny District in the Ústí nad Labem Region in the northwest Czech Republic, and it is trough by the Ohře river.
The design proposed by MACH and IDEA cover the program with a complex timber structure roof, on the one hand, the central zone has a horizontal shape and is surrounded by four pitched roofs, drawing inspiration from rural architecture.

The building tries to bring domestic atmospheres in architecture to a large-scale project by defining small and medium interstitial spaces between the outdoor park and the main training indoor area. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.

Project description by MACH + IDEA

From the organiser
The town of Žatec announces an architectural competition for a new sports hall, which will be used mainly for ball games. The aim of the competition is to select the most suitable architectural solution designed with regard to the overall economy of the building. The new sports hall must be able to host competitive matches and training processes. Full use during school hours and in the evenings by both the public and local sports clubs is envisaged.

From author
We imagine the new Sports Hall of Žatec as a sustainable landmark settled inside a green park. The project is informed by old rural architecture by wrapping a complex sports program under one single pitched roof at this point of the city of Žatec. The building tries to bring domestic atmospheres in architecture to a large-scale project by defining small and medium interstitial spaces between the outdoor park and the main training indoor area. By this means, a unique and sensitive wooden roof underlines and confidently organizes the indoor spaces and programmes.

MACH is an architecture studio based in Madrid and Barcelona, due to the symbiosis between Laia Gelonch (1991) and Marc Subirana (1990). Gelonch and Subirana combine their professional work with research and teaching, teaching at the ETSAB of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and at the La Salle School of Architecture.

The studio is committed to an architecture that pays attention to detail and is well conceived, with a careful yet optimistic project methodology. The practice puts the relationship between space and program in the foreground, carefully approaching each project. The studio's work covers different sectors and scales, seeking new creative opportunities.
