Photographs by Iwan Baan, along with three Studio Lin screen prints, will hold an exhibition previewing Matt Shaw's new monograph, Modern American, at the Columbus Area Visitor Center. Modern American will be published in July 2024 by Monacelli.

The monograph is the first in-depth story of the unique convergence of civic, industrial, and social forces that produced architectural modernism's most prominent laboratory, Columbus, one of the most important modernist architectural cities and destinations in the United States.

With the exhibition, some designs and covers of the books are made public before their publication, which will allow the Landmark Columbus Foundation to raise funds to finance the production of the book.
Iwan Baan's exhibition in Columbus, Indiana, will consist of 12 photographs showing iconic places in Columbus, including the Robert N. Stewart Bridge (J. Muller International, 1999), the North Christian Church (Eero Saarinen, 1966), the First Christian Church (Eliel Saarinen, 1942) and Cleo Rogers. Memorial Library (I.M. Pei, 1969). The exhibition also includes three screen prints of variations of the book cover designed by Studio Lin.

«Columbus, Indiana, is more than the mecca of modern architecture; is an example of how design can help foster an extraordinary community. The dozens of buildings and projects by legendary architects, from mid-century titans like Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei to contemporary professionals Deborah Berke and Robert A.M. Stern: remain an integral part of its urban fabric. This book explores Columbus' optimistic program of new architecture and bold landscapes, pioneered by legendary industrialist J. Irwin Miller and local leaders, and generations' quest to develop the ideal American city through excellence in design.
Said Richard McCoy, executive director of the Columbus Historical Foundation.

The publication of the monograph is configured as a continuing remembrance of the activities carried out during the 2021 Bicentennial of the city of Columbus and in partnership with the Landmark Columbus Foundation, the civic organization behind the progress of preserving and promoting the architectural heritage of the city, as well as the producer of the acclaimed “Show Columbus” program, a two-year cycle of events that uses the context of Columbus to host conversations about innovative ideas and then commissions site-adapted installations in a free public exhibition.

In addition to hosting the exhibition, the Landmark Columbus Foundation is launching the opportunity for supporters of the book to receive their name on the book, a signed copy and a screen print at the $1,000 and $2,500 levels.

«The exhibition is a beautiful look at the Modern American, which has been a deep and extensive investigation into what makes Columbus special. Iwan's four trips to Columbus (one in each season) and Studio Lin's exciting book design will bring the project to visual life. "They are in harmony with the historical text that illuminates the history of this place and reminds us of many forgotten narratives, ideas, and figures."

"As a Columbus native, it is a special opportunity for me to contribute to Columbus' legacy and spend time reflecting on what makes this place important."
Says author Matt Shaw.

Iwan Baan is known is a dutch photographer primarily for images that narrate the life and interactions that occur within architecture. Born in 1975, he grew up outside Amsterdam, studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and worked in publishing and documentary photography in New York and Europe.

After his studies in photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, Iwan Baan followed his interest in documentary photography, before narrowing his focus to record the various ways in which individuals, communities and societies create, and interact within their built environment.

With his combined passion for documentary and space, he’s photographs reveal our innate ability to re-appropriate our available objects and materials, in order to find a place we can call our own. Examples of this can be seen in his work on informal communities where vernacular architecture and placemaking serve as examples of human ingenuity, such as his images of the Torre David in Caracas – a series that won Baan the Golden Lion for Best Installation at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

With no formal training in architecture, his perspective mirrors the questions and perspectives of the everyday individuals who give meaning and context to the architecture and spaces that surround us, and this artistic approach has given matters of architecture an approachable and accessible voice.

As the inaugural recipient of the Julius Shulman award for photography, today, architects such as Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Zaha Hadid, Diller Scofidio & Renfro, Toyo Ito, SANAA and Morphosis turn to Baan to give their work a sense of place and narrative within their environments. Alongside his architecture commissions, he has collaborated on several successful book projects such as Insular Insight: Where Art and Architecture Conspire with Nature, Torre David: Informal Vertical Communities and Brasilia & Chandigarh – Living With Modernity. Baan’s work also appears on the pages of architecture, design and lifestyle publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Architectural Record, Domus, Abitare and Architectural Digest.

Iwan Baan was named one of the 100 most influential people in contemporary architecture world by the magazine Il Magazine dell’Architettura on occasion of their 100th issue. He is recipient of the AIA Stephen A. Kliment Oculus Award.
