Description of project by MMiT Architects
The building of the Regional Library of Ronda is built under the parameters as winner of the Ideas Contest carried out by the City Council of Ronda in 2013. The Contest included in its program also the execution of a Bus Station. The Library executed is the first phase of the set.
The complexity of integrating two uses such as Library and Bus Station in a zone limited by institutes, sports areas and train road posed a great challenge for the correct operation of all the elements. In this way, the Bus Station is projected to function as an acoustic barrier for the train tracks, providing the library with a public plaza facing South.
The Library resolves its integration as well as the Station through the game of foreshortening visuals. The structure of Laminated Wood that form the structural ribs work of lattice and solar control and at the same time they allow different visual recognitions from both scales of the project. The dynamic-mechanical scale of cars and trains allow an opaque recognition of the whole, being the scale of the proximity where the building becomes permeable.
This set of relationships on the ground floor of the library is made using a façade graffitied with poems by Vicente Espinel allowing different recognitions in the changes of use from night to day.
The situation of the Bus Station includes an important factor in the Library Organization Chart. The possibility of using it as a waiting area for buses. In this way, the ground floor is understood as a public area, with spaces such as a playroom, newspaper library and common areas, aimed at a more dynamic public. The first floor is intended for static and study spaces.
The Solar factor in the city of Ronda means that all the spaces in the library are facing North, with the structural ribs being solar sieves.
The central structure is made by concrete with large lights and the flight of the first floor is executed by laminated wood. The roof is resolved by lacquered steel sandwich panel and the ground floor enclosure by folded and perforated sheets of lacquered steel. The solar collection, the orientation of it and the use of materials such as laminated wood allow a correct climatic function of the building adapting to the needs of the place.
