"Soy raíz / I am root" is the name of the latest project completed by Boa Mistura, in the city of Quito, Ecuador. Located in the vicinity of a special place for the country's historical memory, on the slopes of Pichincha at 3,100 m above sea level where the monument honouring the battle with which Ecuador's independence was forged is located.

Today, 200 years later, the Cima de la Libertad seems to have forgotten its values and welcomes one of the most marginalized communities from the social dynamics of the rest of the city.

Boa Mistura developed the project for two months as part of the “Caminarte” urban intervention project, which seeks to activate the country's intangible cultural heritage with interventions in public space.

The realization of the intervention was possible thanks to the participation of more than 85 neighbours who conceptualized the proposal, counting on the collaboration for the execution of 250 people.

Symbolically, the work and its participatory process represent the root of a new beginning for the Cima de la Libertad, a new meeting point that grows based on collaboration and avoiding confrontation.

Project description by Boa Mistura

“SOY RAÍZ” is an intervention of more than 1000 m² at the top of the Cima de la Libertad (Quito), a determining place in the history of Ecuador. In 1822, this hill was the scene of the Battle of Pichincha, which culminated in the liberation of the city, establishing here the seed of the country's independence. Today, 200 years later, the Cima de la Libertad is one of the communities most marginalized from the social dynamics of the rest of the city.

For two months, the project has had the participation of more than 85 residents of the community for the conceptualization and choice of the proposal, and more than 250 people from all over the city during execution, including colleges and universities from other areas of the city in order to break down that invisible barrier and build a bridge through an art piece.

Symbolically, the work and its participatory process represent the root of a new beginning for the Cima de la Libertad, a new meeting point based not on confrontation but on cooperation, solidarity and what unites us as human beings.

“Soy Raíz” is part of the “Caminarte” urban intervention project, which seeks to give a voice to the country's intangible cultural heritage through interventions in the public space by local and international artists.

Boa Mistura. The work of Boa Mistura is all about the love of graffiti, colour and life. This group founded by 5 Spanish artists is, as the name says, a good mixture. Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick have developed their work in different fields, applying both a diversity of styles and the different views of each member. Boa Mistura represents a mixture of perspectives which complement, influence and mix themselves together in order to create something better. From graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration, Boa Mistrua want to give the world its colour back. 5 heads, 10 hands, just one heart.

Boa Mistura is a multidisciplinary group whose roots are in graffiti, currently directed by Javier Serrano, Pablo Ferreiro and Pablo Purón. The group works in various fields: from the latest trends in graffiti and street murals, to illustration, graphic design, studio painting and collaborations with interior designers and architects.

They have taken part in exhibitions in art galleries such as the Reina Sofía Museum and the Casa Encendida in Madrid, and the DA2 Museum in Salamanca. They have collaborated with foundations such as ONCE (Spanish national organisation for the blind), Oxfam and Antonio Gala, and given lectures at universities such as Madrid, Seville and Alcalá de Henares.

Boa Mistura has completed projects for brands such as Google, Microsoft, Sony Music and Adidas and in 2010 a Latin Grammy nomination for best cover design. The term “Boa Mistura”, from the Portuguese for “good mixture”, refers to the diversity of style and perspectives of each member. Love for graffiti, colour and life. Distinct visions which complement each other, influence each other, and always combine to create something even better.
