The Spanish collective Boa Mistura and the Puerto Rican artist Myke Towers designed the “Unión” project, an intervention that invites the public to reflect on the invisible ties that connect people and places, beyond geographical, cultural, ethnic, or social distance.

The project is composed of six sports courts, painted in six different cities (Santo Domingo, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, Madrid, San Juan, and Medellín) that, together, make up the word UNIÓN.
The intervention of the Boa Mistura collective and the artist Myke Towers was carried out in March 2021 in the communities of La Zurza in Santo Domingo, the Copilco University Issste Housing Unit in Mexico City, Renca in Santiago de Chile, La Cañada Real in Madrid, Río Piedras in San Juan and Comuna 13 of Medellín. All of them are connected through the pieces, which establish a successful relationship between the public, culture, art, and the daily life of citizens.

The objective of the “Unión” project is to provide additional value to the fields, which are the heart of the neighborhoods. A large part of the community's activity is articulated around them. They are squares, stadiums, dance halls, and concert stages. The intervention reminds us that music and art are vectors of connection that cross borders.

Description of project by Boa Mistura

The project “Unión” is an artistic collaboration between the Spanish artist collective Boa Mistura and the Puerto Rican artist Myke Towers.

“Unión” reflects those invisible bonds that connect people and places beyond cultural, racial, or social differences.
Music and Art are connecting vectors that cross borders.

The work comprises six abstract, individual pieces, painted in 6 different places (Santo Domingo, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, Madrid, San Juan, and Medellín). Together, they make up the word UNIÓN.

We carried out the project in March 2021 in the communities of La Zurza in Santo Domingo, Copilco University’s Unidad Habitacional Issste in Mexico City, Renca in Santiago de Chile, La Cañada Real in Madrid, Río Piedras in San Juan and Comuna 13 in Medellín. All of them are now connected through this work. Union of countries, communities and people.

Sport courts are the neighborhoods' hearts. A large part of the community's activities are articulated around them. Courts are squares, stadiums, dance halls, and concert stages.
That's why we aim at sport courts as the project's canvas. Because sport is universal.

Boa Mistura. The work of Boa Mistura is all about the love of graffiti, colour and life. This group founded by 5 Spanish artists is, as the name says, a good mixture. Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick have developed their work in different fields, applying both a diversity of styles and the different views of each member. Boa Mistura represents a mixture of perspectives which complement, influence and mix themselves together in order to create something better. From graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration, Boa Mistrua want to give the world its colour back. 5 heads, 10 hands, just one heart.

Boa Mistura is a multidisciplinary group whose roots are in graffiti, currently directed by Javier Serrano, Pablo Ferreiro and Pablo Purón. The group works in various fields: from the latest trends in graffiti and street murals, to illustration, graphic design, studio painting and collaborations with interior designers and architects.

They have taken part in exhibitions in art galleries such as the Reina Sofía Museum and the Casa Encendida in Madrid, and the DA2 Museum in Salamanca. They have collaborated with foundations such as ONCE (Spanish national organisation for the blind), Oxfam and Antonio Gala, and given lectures at universities such as Madrid, Seville and Alcalá de Henares.

Boa Mistura has completed projects for brands such as Google, Microsoft, Sony Music and Adidas and in 2010 a Latin Grammy nomination for best cover design. The term “Boa Mistura”, from the Portuguese for “good mixture”, refers to the diversity of style and perspectives of each member. Love for graffiti, colour and life. Distinct visions which complement each other, influence each other, and always combine to create something even better.
