The success of the first extension of the Louvre designed by SANAA in Lens, has led to the decision to build this second extension in Lièvin, adjacent to that piece of Lens. In the contest there was a tie between Richard Rogers and Alberto Campo Baeza with Raphaël Gabrion, which after a final negotiation phase was won by the proposal presented by Richard Rogers. The function of the new building is to properly store the large amount of valuable pieces, around 250,000, which currently are kept in the Louvre's basements. The need to properly save all these treasures is what led to the directors of the Louvre and the French State to hold this competition.
Description of the project by Estudio Campo Baeza
The building of Campo Baeza and Gabrion appears on the landscape like a great ship, very horizontal, dark, making visible from the first moment the character of secure fortress, well able to keep those treasures. The motto with which they've won was Le Bateau Îvre which is referred to the famous poem by Rimbaud, also on the accuracy of his poetic rhythm ABAB. A large and dark podium containing all workshops and services, and emerging, as if it was the chimney of a great ship, the cubic part of the storage. If the image of the ship is adequate, it is even more the drydock, because that's what it sounds like: a boat on repair at a dry dock. Repairing the works of the Louvre.
Functionally the spatial structure created by Campo Baeza and Gabrion is rigorous and of extreme precision, such as the poem by Rimbaud. Each requirement of the complex program has been promptly fulfilled in the project and they have managed to put everything in order. Order that our architects defended as one of the essential characteristics of the architecture.
Campo Baeza remembered with emotion the story of Bernini and his trip to Paris to see the Louvre's construction. A trip which was described by Chantelou in a highly recommended book for any architect. And how after three projects the building was finally built by Perrault. It is worth the effort to see the beautiful Bernini's drawings for Paris. Campo Baeza said that somehow, if they had won this award, this can build the new Louvre, it would have been like save his bacon for the master. And for the first moment, they devote this project to Bernini, although it won't be build.
