Mexican architecture studio RZERO was commissioned to design a new market, which replaces an former one, in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital of the state of Chiapas, located in southern Mexico.

The 22  November Market is part of a strategic plan to improve the urban conditions of the place, which aims to resolve the marginality and poverty situation in this urban area.

The new market designed by RZERO estudio is characterised by its great spatial fluidity. The design has a series of internal courtyards and multiple spaces that dilute the movements and blur the barriers between the exterior and interior spaces. In addition, the prior analysis of the site's conditions allowed the creation of a program that was adapted to the needs of the city's inhabitants, turning the design into a safe space that serves as a connection point and a place where experiences and products can be shared.

The new market is organised with a 3.60m grid that is raised in a modular reinforced concrete structure that organises the entire space. The roof is built with large barrel vaults, also made of reinforced concrete, which contrast with the walls made of red brick that delimit the functional program.

Project description by RZERO

Located in a state renowned for its natural beauty and handcrafted goods but also with areas of high marginalization, such as the Patria Nueva neighborhood, is the 22 de Noviembre Market. This project is part of a strategic plan for the urban improvement of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.

On a lot defined by the previous building—which had to be demolished due to its extremely poor condition—the design of the new market stems from an analysis of the site to create a program that meets the needs of the inhabitants and serves as a blank canvas for the community.

Based on a 3.60-meter grid, the project is built on a reinforced concrete structure that modulates the building and defines the spaces between the vendors. In addition, large barrel vaults emerge from the structure to infuse the place with character and excitement. A sequence of red brick walls further defines the edges towards the street.

Moreover, a series of internal courtyards and multi-use spaces blur the boundaries between the exterior and interior to create a public space where the barriers between being inside or outside disappear. In this way, the new building provides the Patria Nueva neighborhood with a dignified and safe space where inhabitants can share the richness of their products as well as the multiplicity of their experiences.
