Shift Archictecture and Urbanism, is the selected team this week for the NEW GENERATIONS series by Itinerant Office. Based in Rotterdam, the office focuses on the fields of architecture, urbanism and spatial planning. The office combines a broad engagement in space production with precise and project-specific design interventions.

Harm Timmermans and Oana Radeş founded the office in 2005. In 2010 Thijs van Bijsterveldt joined the principal team. Despite the youth of the studio, they have received several awards and nominations, including the Charlotte Köhler Prize, Prix de Rome, Archiprix International and Archiprix NL.

All three partners teach and lecture at different universities and schools throughout the Netherlands, such as the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Tilburg, the Design Academy Eindhoven, Technical University of Eindhoven and the Rietveld Academy Amsterdam.

All three partners teach and lecture at different universities and schools throughout the Netherlands, such as the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Tilburg, the Design Academy Eindhoven, the Technical University of Eindhoven, and the Rietveld Academy Amsterdam.

Shift Architecture Urbanism is a Rotterdam-based practice that operates both beyond the traditional boundaries of architecture and at the same time within the hard core of architecture. In both cases, we believe that architecture should be there to make a difference, or shouldn’t be there at all.

Shift stands for a proactive approach to relevant spatial issues shaping the contemporary environment. The office engages in self-initiated research-by-design studies on themes such as transport, infrastructure, sports, and (the public domain of) the city. In these studies, Shift visualizes future scenarios through specific spatial interventions charged with form, program, and typology.

Shift strives for a craftsmanship attitude throughout each phase of the architectural process. Experimentation and originality are balanced with skill and precision. Rather than on the newness, the focus is on performance. The office finds it its task to safeguard the integrity of each project. Shift takes responsibility for the architecture of the entire process: from sketch to realization.
