On December 6, 2018, the new Elbbrücken Underground station of the U4 line was ceremonially opened. The station was designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) in cooperation with the structural engineers schlaich bergermann partner (sbp).
Located on the Elbbrücken bridges at the end of the new HafenCity district and designed by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), the metro station, with its conspicuous roof construction, is a milestone in the development of HafenCity.

By forming an urban center at the end of the Baakenhafen basin, the new district of Elbbrücken will close HafenCity to the east. The metro station, the roof of the S-Bahn station and the pedestrian connecting bridge were designed by gmp and will be built in successive stages.

The design uses the technical possibilities available today to continue the theme of the imposing steel constructions of the past: the steel arches of Freihafenelbbrücken and the "fish" beams "of the Neue Elbbrücken . The structural members are outside the envelope, the glazing rests on the interior, thus achieving a noticeable presence in the urban landscape.

Description of project by gmp Architekten

HafenCity is the most important urban expansion area of the growing Hamburg metropolis. Forming an urban center at the end of the Baakenhafen basin, the new Elbbrücken district will close off HafenCity to the east. In order to connect the area to the local public transport system, the U4 Underground line has been extended to the Elbbrücken where, in combination with the future rapid transit railway (S-Bahn) station, an attractive interchange will be created. The Underground station, the roof of the S-Bahn station, and the connecting skywalk were designed by gmp and will be built in successive stages.

A special feature of the new Underground station is the fact that the railway track emerges from underground and continues above ground in parallel to the Elbbrücken bridges. Here, the architecture of the station will be a conspicuous focal point in the midst of the high-density urban center of the new district. In its highly exposed urban position on the River Elbe, in dialog with the Elbbrücken bridges, the design utilizes the technical possibilities available today to continue the theme of the imposing steel constructions of the past: the sweeping steel arches of the Freihafenelbbrücken and the “fish beams” of the Neue Elbbrücken. The roof construction with its ellipsoidal arch profile is created from crossing arched steel frames. The twisted steel beams are arranged to form a diamond-shaped grid pattern in which the individual arches stabilize each other. The structural members are outside the envelope—the glazing being supported on the inside—thereby achieving a conspicuous presence in the cityscape, creating an esthetic response to the adjacent Elbbrücken bridges. At both ends of the structure, the roof—following the diamond pattern—comes forward to a point that gives the station its dynamic flair, befitting a modern infrastructure building.

The different levels of the ticket hall, the platforms, and the two bridges for crossing the tracks are accessed via staircases, escalators, and elevators. The top steel bridge provides access to the skywalk that will connect the Underground station with the S-Bahn station. In this project, architecture and structural engineering are closely interconnected; the synthesis of these two disciplines is mandatory for the optimal development of such a project. The three-dimensional geometry was developed by gmp—Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners in cooperation with structural engineers schlaich bergermann partner already at the competition stage of the design, which was selected for construction by Hamburger Hochbahn AG.

gmp Architekten. gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (abbreviated gmp Architeckten or gmp) is a German Architecture practice based in Hamburg and with offices in Asia and other regions. It was founded in 1965 by the architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg. In the first two years of the Meinhard von Gerkan and Marg Volkwin association, they won eight architectural competitions already, including the design for the Berlin Tegel Airport.

Meinhard von Gerkan. Born in Riga, Latvia in 1935, Meinhard von Gerkan is an architect at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he graduated in 1964. The following year, he teamed up with Volkwin Marg, a partnership which still exists today under the name "von Gerkan, Marg und Partner "(GMP), and with a base in Hamburg.

In 1974 Gerkan was appointed to a professorship at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he directed 2002 the Institute of Architectural Design (Department of Architecture and Design A).
Meinhard von Gerkan is also a member of the Free Academy of Arts Hamburg.

Marg Volkwin. Marg Volkwin was born in 1936 in Königsberg, East Prussia. From 1958 to 1964 he studied Architecture in Berlin at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he graduated in 1965, the year in which he also founded the architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners (GMP) together with Meinhard von Gerkan.

In 1972 he was appointed as a member of the Free Academy of Arts Hamburg and in 1974, a member of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning. From 1975 to 1983 he was the first vice president, then (1979) President of the Federal German Architects (BDA). In 1986 he received a professorship at the RWTH Aachen for city planning and teaching work.

Since 2007 Marg is director of the Academy of Structures (AAC), which he founded along with von Gerkan through the GMP Foundation. Volkwin Marg is a member of the advisory board of the Federal Cultural Foundation Construction.

In 2009 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany ausgezeichnet. In 2010 he became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

In 2012 he received an honorary doctorate in the Department of Architecture, awarded by the Academic Council of the University of Hamburg HafenCity.

Together, Meinhard von Gerkan and Marg Volkwin have won more than 490 awards in national and international contests, among which more than 290 are first prizes.
