MAYICE will attend the international event of design in Manhattan, which will take place between the 15 and the 18 of May.

Imanol Yebra Alonso and Marta Calderon Elósegui are the two Spanish architects behind the design brand MAYICE.

MAYICE.  They were recently awarded with a Special Mention in the Architizer A+ Awards and some of their designs can be seen this year at WantedDesign. Their most recent work is the Ray table, to which we dedicate this publication, an original handmade design inspired by the asymmetric geometry of the marine world that proposes another way of storing objects.

Description of the design by MAYICE

Ray is inspired by the freshness of the sea; our reference is sea life, in particular the Manta Ray. Our interest in the sea has led us to examine the asymmetry of animal life and nature. All the shapes and lines are asymmetric as in nature. The idea of the Ray table comes from this.

This special table is made of three materials and compiled by three craftsmen. Ash wood by acabinet maker, stainless tube by a blacksmith and net cotton fish by a dressmaker. The table top is designed to be simple while hiding the complexity of the layer below. It has clean lines but using sea life as a reference, below there is a multilayered world. The table top with its different tones and colours is reminiscent of the imprint of waves and tides on the sand. Underneath this table top there is a box that slides from side to side. Objects can be placed in the box or in the fish net that surrounds it. The fish net is cotton and was originally used for fishing. The fish net envelopes the lower part of the table and moulds itself to the geometry of the piece.

The idea of using this fishing net was inspired by traditional fishing. The table top is made of various types of ash wood . The box is made of stainless steel chrome metal. The fishing net is cotton. These are ecological materials. The fins of the Ray inspire the table legs. They are made of stainless steel chrome metal as well. The measurements of this table are 1.75 cm in length and 1.10 cm in width.
