On an elongated urban plot in the centre of Paris, the architectural studio Clément Blanchet Architecture carefully transforms a 19th-century building into a new Design Campus for the “Istituto Marangoni”, with good spatial articulation and elegant formalisation. A complex of numerous spaces dedicated to creation such as classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums and offices where students, teachers and artists can explore new forms of creation.

The project extends while respecting the shape of the old building and organises its spaces in a U-shape, generating a courtyard with landscaped areas that visually connect the different volumes with the surroundings, allowing a dialogue between the pre-existing and the new building while respecting the proportions and depths of the views, resulting in a contemporary figure that blends into the Parisian urban fabric.

Conceived as a living and dynamic infrastructure, the project by Clément Blanchet Architecture transcends the limitations of the site to create an educational environment, a succession of exploration spaces and a play of transparencies that houses spaces for learning, inspiration and exchange, where to work, exhibit or socialize.

Starting from a facade of corrugated steel panels to which a large staircase designed as a hybrid space over the garden, large glass panels and a bold organization are incorporated, the campus allows a maximum level of natural light and ventilation that encourages and amplifies exchanges and creativity through the different media developed by the school, working with fabrics, materials, light, movement and contrasts.

Project description by Clément Blanchet Architecture

Located at the intersection of rue de Lubeck and rue Boissiere in Paris 75016, the project consists of the creation of Istituto Marangoni Paris’s new campus, about 3000 sqm of classrooms, auditoriums, meeting rooms, offices….

While transforming and reformatting an old 19th century building, the project extends through an elongated architectural and urban figure, such to form a new courtyard; allowing dialogue in between the old and the new buildings. In order to respect the widths and depths of views and open spaces required by law, it will be organized in a «U» shape around a second courtyard, which will be enclosed by the existing party wall to the north. Regarding the exterior spaces, the couryard will feature planted areas and visual connections.

It creates an imbricated figure embedded in a very Parisian Urban fabric.

The architectural staircase is projected on the garden which reunifies different levels, such to form an homogeneous campus experience.

The Marangoni team, students, professors, artists, creators will be able to explore infinite new cinematic fashion and creative immersions.

The external walkways become a showcase for the young designers to exhibit their work. In this way the internal courtyard become a public stage for the schools work. As for the roof, it will be divided into 3 parts: a non-accessible green roof, a succession of accessible terraces and sloping roofs.

All the architectural programs and their organization are formed to amplify all settings to create.

This project reinvents learning spaces by integrating them into an exceptional setting, between tradition and modernity, in the center of the world’s fashion capital.

Conceived as a living, breathing infrastructure, the campus stands out for its spaces for exploration and its play on transparency. More than a place of learning, it is an international showcase for fashion and the arts. The architecture of the project amplifies exchanges and creativity through all the mediums developed by the school, working with fabrics, materials, light, movement and contrasts.

The architecture of the campus transcends the constraints of the site to turn them into creative levers. The staircase, projected onto a garden, becomes a hybrid space inviting reflection and inspiration. This unique space is designed to stimulate serendipity and encourage creativity through a bold and fluid program organization.

The facade finishing approach will consist of a variety of corrugated steel panels, each feature having a unique corrugation and being in a slightly different shade of grey. Fullheight glass panels with metal windows and mullions will be incorporated on all facades to allow a maximum level of natural light and ventilation in a somewhat enclosed area.

It’s architecture is robust, elegant and deeply respectful of its environment.

"This campus is much more than a building. It’s an invitation to explore new creative frontiers and an essential contribution to the international reputation of Paris as a capital of fashion and innovation."

Clément Blanchet Architecture (cBA) is an innovative architecture and urban design practice that brings together multidisciplinary and multicultural actors on themes around the city, architecture and all media related to it. The firm approaches the design of architecture, infrastructure and the city as necessarily interrelated, and in negotiation with planning, development and public space. The practice is structured as a laboratory, informing and generating architecture and urbanism out of the conditions of the city and territory.

The synergy between theory and practice is the base of its methodological approach. The practice engages the consciousness of reality, of the real world, but also the analysis of phenomena – environmental, developmental, economic - that affect and feed architecture. This methodology not only deals with inventions but also with manipulations, making program legible, and ensuring resilience and durability over time. This structure operates at multiple scales; from designing interiors to public cultural facilities, while considering specific approaches in the areas of education, housing, infrastructure, landscape and urbanism. The firm has also developed tools for dialogue with different urban and project actors, aimed to place the user at the heart of the creative process.

Clément Blanchet is Principle of Clément Blanchet Architecture (cBA) and a former Associate of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), where he joined in 2004.

In 2011, Clement Blanchet was appointed Director of OMA France, with whom cBA continues to collaborate with on ongoing projects led by Blanchet.

He graduated with high honours from the Architectural school of Versailles and has been an invited critic in France, England, Holland, Switzerland, Denmark & Sweden. He currently teaches at Paris Val de Seine Architectural School and ESA. Clément Blanchet divides his time between this firm in Paris and the United States where he also teaches at the University of Michigan and Rice University.
