This book is about the places of the domestic in the modernity; its aim is the readers interested in the architecture of the house, and in it, they are going to find answers to the question of the modern house existed or not.
After a short revision of a certain nineteenth-century history, the tasks that faced up the new housing architecture are set out. Thenceforth a description of the kinds and mechanisms of reference of the modern house definition and some of the most well-known experimental houses of the first decades of the 20th century is made, what allows us to document its real possibilities. It is showed that where the architectonic research succeeded, was in the search of models of adding housing units, with all the experimental and political instruments available in its age. A round inside the new equipment, accompanied by a look at Japanese culture, allows us to discover some applied mechanisms to the space variability and the domestic times. At last, the question about the modern house has had in fact answers.
The concern about the modern house is present nowadays. A lot of what is said and done at present in the matter or housing has already said and done during the time that this book covers. It is amazing to confirm how far the majority of the best and most advanced domestic architectures of many current architects were already posed, solved and verified in those first decades of the 20th century. This text and the examples that illustrate it have the aim to avoid that contemporary architects waste their time inventing what has many years ago already invented.
