Architecture studios DELVA Landscape Architects, KAAN Architecten, and DENC-STUDIO have formed an international team, led by DELVA, to design the “Poort van de Prijkels” (Prijkels Gate) building. The new office building has been commissioned by the Veneco association and will be located in the small town of Deinze, southwest of the better-known university town of Ghent, Belgium.

The team aims to create a new model of how buildings and nature can develop together while respecting the values of sustainability and ecology. An attempt will be made to change the typical industrialized perception of these buildings and give them a new, more nature-friendly conception.
DELVA Landscape Architects, KAAN Architecten and DENC-STUDIO will create a change in the plot by introducing more green spaces, forming a new context together with the three wooden towers proving that business parks can also be pleasant places for people and animals. To this end, both the soil and the ecology of the environment are respected, avoiding unnecessary compaction, building in a responsible and balanced way, and ensuring that people, nature and animals coexist sustainably and giving priority to mental health and well-being.

The project team seeks to move away from the road infrastructure and gray concrete typical of the area and unites the landscape and the buildings, merging them into a new world that serves as an entrance to the wooden towers and ensures the encounter between nature and people. In this green door of the Prijkels there will also be space for landscaping by the Dutch artist Paul de Kort and his work called De karreweg, which will be photographed daily to create a timelapse that will form a digital catwalk.

Description of project by DELVA, KAAN and DENC-STUDIO

A barren wasteland in the parceled-out Flanders is undergoing a metamorphosis; a transformation that will introduce extensive green. Many new trees will soon form the new context of three timber towers. A gate; an inseparable ensemble of landscape and architecture, stimulates and shows that business parks can also transform into inspiring and pleasant places for people and animals.

International team led by DELVA wins tender
Team DELVA – KAAN – DENKC-STUDIO, wins the tender Poort van de Prijkels. This led by Alheembouw-Steenoven and commissioned by the intermunicipal association Veneco.

The team is joining forces to make the "Gate of the Prijkels" a new reference in how office buildings and nature can be developed hand in hand.

Setting an example for the new way of working
Sustainability, ecology, social welfare, architecture and landscape value: the combination makes the "Poort van de Prijkels" an exemplary project. It answers more than one problem. We want to switch up the preconceived notion of the typical ugly, concrete industrial site. We strive to create a real destination, an inspiring place for people and animals that focuses on well-being; a place that you are drawn to because it has its own identity. Ecology is the decisive factor in this, that is why we are creating a space here that fully respects and integrates the natural environment. Out of respect for the soil, we avoid any unnecessary compaction and we make a closed cut and fill balance. In this way we try to ensure that people, nature and animals live together coherently and sustainably.

The project thus shines in its integrated approach to all current building challenges of our time. Responsibility is thus taken to carry out the construction tasks in a balanced and sustainable way.

Mental health first
Inclusion and the mental well-being of future users are given the highest priority. A beautiful forest landscape will soon meander between the buildings and be admired from the terraces.

“We are moving away from the gray highway infrastructure and traditional concrete here. In this story, we bring landscape and buildings together in such a way that they almost merge, so that you really enter a new world.”

Steven Delva.

A park to get lost in, literally and figuratively
A sea of forest green; this will become the cradle of a business park that harmonizes sustainability, ecology, and conscious entrepreneurship.

“We create a world that inspires; that ensures nature and people meet, and at the same time forms an entrance to the timber towers. Landscape, trees, wooden facade, together they will form the green gate of the Prijkels.”

Steven Delva.

Every day greeted by art
Between all that natural beauty, there will soon also be room for landscape art. A remarkable landscape installation, called De Karreweg, by Dutch artist Paul de Kort will greet everyone who steps through the gate. The work will be photographed daily for a year with the aim of creating a timelapse that will form a digital gateway.

DELVA is a leading office for landscape design and urban planning. We are convinced of the power of our craft: working with the systematics of nature to tackle the major challenges of the future. That is why we turn the design process upside down and take the landscape as our basis. We use spatial development as a means of densification, greening and sustainability.

Starting from the essence of the place, we create meaningful landscapes and spatial experiences, from sketch to realization. By taking a position and cooperating integrally with all partners in the design process, we connect the landscape intrinsically with buildings, technology, policy and financial viability.

DELVA is located in the heart of Amsterdam and is led by founding partner Steven Delva and partner Emiel Swinnen. They are supported by Rogier Hendriks (concept and design), Sander van den Bosch (engineering and implementation) and Jeroen Jacobs (planting specialist). Since our foundation, we have grown into a dynamic and solid team of 25 landscape architects, urban designers, architects and cultural technicians. Over the years, we have built up a broad portfolio, with a rich diversity of locations, scale levels, phases and typologies. We have won multiple awards and are very proud to have been announced Architect of the Year.

KAAN Architecten is a Dutch architectural firm based in Rotterdam, São Paulo, and Paris, with over 30 years of experience in a wide range of scales and typologies. Kees Kaan, Vincent Panhuysen and Dikkie Scipio founded KAAN Architecten in 2014.

Through a collaborative and analytical design approach, KAAN Architecten promotes quality, pragmatism, and the Dutch building traditions of sustainability and welfare. This is further refined by merging practical and academic expertise, which supports their response to the increasingly challenging complexities and contradictions of the built environment.

Led by Kees Kaan, Vincent Panhuysen and Dikkie Scipio, the firm comprises an international team of architects, landscape architects, urban planners, engineers, and graphic designers. KAAN Architecten believes that cross-pollination between projects and disciplines fosters the essential critical discourse within the firm.

Since its establishment, KAAN Architecten has engaged in a diverse array of projects within both the public and private sectors. Over time, project teams have evolved to become progressively multidisciplinary and dynamic. Their unwavering focus is on fostering a culture of continual evolution, recognising this paramount approach in a profession that undergoes rapid transformation.

At the heart of KAAN Architecten’s philosophy is the belief that all projects acquire distinctive character through an architecturally curated layered dialogue involving all stakeholders. This approach extends to developing enduring relationships with clients, consultants, and partners. In this collaborative journey, each project becomes an opportunity for meaningful engagement, achieving architectural solutions that resonate with the diverse voices and perspectives involved.

· From 1988 until 2013, Kees Kaan was the founding partner of Claus en Kaan Architecten. Kaan graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft in 1987. Since 2006 he has been a professor of Architectural Design at TU Delft and initiator of the Complex Projects Chair, launched in 2012. The Chair's research focuses on large-scale projects that characterise this era of rapid global urbanisation. In 2019 Kaan was appointed Chairman of the Architecture Department. Moreover, he has been a Principal Investigator at Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) since 2016. Kees Kaan is a lecturer and member of various juries and boards in the Netherlands and abroad. Numerous books and exhibitions have been dedicated to his body of work. In June 2024, Kees Kaan was officially inducted as a member of the Académie d'Architecture.

· Vincent Panhuysen brings expertise and vision to each project he undertakes. His impact on the architectural landscape is profound, with a diverse portfolio encompassing court buildings, university centres, governmental and cultural institutions, crematoriums, and apartment complexes. Panhuysen's approach to design is marked by a deep commitment to the entire process, from conceptualisation to construction. While he values functionality and clarity, his architectural ethos transcends passing trends, emphasising a timeless elegance rooted in relaxed functionalism. Central to his design philosophy is a dedication to creating spaces that prioritise spaciousness and clear organisation, hallmarks evident in the work of KAAN Architecten. His role as a visiting professor at Delft University of Technology further underscores his commitment to shaping the future of architecture through education and mentorship. For his special and careful guidance in the renovation of the Provinciehuis of North-Brabant, Vincent Panhuysen was awarded the "Commissarispenning", a medal of merit from the Commissioner of the King Wim van de Donk, in 2015.

· Dikkie Scipio has been trained in various disciplines. She holds a master’s degree in applied arts, industrial, and interior design from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and afterward qualified as an architect at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. Simultaneously, she owned a gallery in Amsterdam and a design studio in Utrecht. Scipio’s training allows her to lead work, ranging from large-scale master plans in urbanism and architecture to furniture and interior design, from the initial concept to execution. She is an expert in managing complex projects and processes, with a particular focus on museums and heritage renovation. Scipio is also a writer, columnist, international lecturer, and a member of several boards and juries. As a spokeswoman for integrated art and craftsmanship in architecture, her views have been featured in many publications and documentaries.
