The Free State of Bavaria intends to build in Munich a concert hall, the design of which is the object of the present competition.
The concert hall is to be built as a detached new building on a lot of approx.. 5,300 sqm located in the Werksviertel, a neighborhood near the Ostbahnhof (Munich-East railway station). What is being sought is a concept that in terms of urban and architectural design, economic viability and functionality constitutes a consistent and convincing solution.
The room program includes an overall floor space of approx. 9,500 sqm, including two concert audience chambers with approx. 1,800 and approx. 600 seats, respectively. Both chambers must satisfy the most exacting acoustic requirements.
The concert chambers are to be complemented with ancillary functions such as an outpost of Munich’s College for Music and Drama with a stage venue and practice halls, and an “Education Area” for the musical education of both children and adults. In addition, the building is to house areas for a foyer, gastronomy, retail shops, and offices. The basement will house an underground parking garage with several levels.
