In October 2015, the City of Chicago will launch the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, North America’s largest international survey of contemporary architecture. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, The Chicago Architecture Biennial, and The Chicago Park District have announced a competition for a micro-architecture on Chicago's iconic lakefront. The Lakefront Kiosk Competition winner will have their project built as a featured component of the Biennial.

Co-Artistic Directors Joseph Grima and Sarah Herda announce The State of the Art of Architecture as the title of the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. For its first commissioned project, photographer Iwan Baan captures the dynamic urban setting of this exciting new venture.

Architecture defines a city, and no city has been defined by its architecture—or has influenced global architectural design—like Chicago.

—Mayor Rahm Emanuel

In the spring of 2016, it will be moved to the shore of Lake Michigan alongside several architectural gems such as Frank Gehry's Pritzker Pavilion, MAD's soon-to-be-built George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, and The Bean. It will debut in October at the Biennial.

The competition is sponsored by BP, and the winner of the competition will receive the “BP Prize,” a $10,000 honorarium and a $75,000 construction budget for the project. The kiosks will be multi purpose. The space will be flexible for different future occupants. It could be a food or concession stand, but must remain open for a multitude of uses.

The mayor's office has heavily promoted the city's cultural sectors, including architecture and urbanism. “Our parks are a vital part of our city’s heritage, and the Lakefront Kiosk Competition is an opportunity to bring progressive design to one of Chicago’s most celebrated urban spaces,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

The winner will be selected by a jury including David Adjaye, Jeanne Gang, CAB Co-curators Sarah Herda and Joseph Grima, The Chicago Parks Department's Rob Rejman and BP's Michael O'Brien. Applications are due March 23, 2015.
