The third installment of the Fall 2011 BIArch Conversations series will be held on Wednesday, December 14th, between Visiting Professor Philippe Rahm and Cecilia Obiol, Assistant Director of the Barcelona Institute of Architecture.

Rahm is principal of Philippe Rahm Architectes based in Paris and has taught and lectured widely at institutions including the AA in London, the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture and the ETH Lausanne.  Currently a visiting lecturer at Princeton University SoA he is also leading the short design studio titled ‘Spectral Process’ in the MBIArch Master’s Program.

The Conversations series aim to bring the current theoretical dissertations being developed in the 2011-2012 MBIArch master’s program to the public, with four of this Fall’s Visiting Professors being led by one of the members of the BIArch academic body to discuss the ideas, topics and methodologies they are researching in an effort to explore new perspectives.

Philippe Rahm (born April 28, 1967, in Pully, Switzerland) is a Swiss architect who studied at the Federal Polytechnic Schools of Lausanne and Zurich obtaining his architectural degree in 1993. He is the principal at Philippe Rahm Architectes in Paris, France.

In 2002 he was chosen to represent Switzerland at the 8th Architecture Biennale in Venice and was one of the 25 manifesto’s architects of Aaron Betsky’s 2008 Architectural Venice Biennale. He was a nominee in 2009 for the Ordos Prize in China and in 2008 was in the top ten of the International Chernikov Prize in Moscow. He has participated in many exhibitions worldwide (Archilab 2000, SF-MoMA 2001, CCA Kitakyushu 2004, Frac Centre, Orléans, Centre Pompidou, Beaubourg 2003-2006 and 2007, Manifesta 7, 2008, Louisiana museum, Denmark, 2009) and in 2007 he had a personal exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.

He was a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome in 2000. He has taught at the Architectural Association in London (2005-2006), the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture in Switzerland (2004, 2005), the ETH Lausanne (2006, 2007) and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (2009-2010). Currently a visiting lecturer of Architectural Design at Princeton, Rahm has lectured widely including at Cooper Union NY, Harvard School of Design, UCLA and ETH Zurich.

Cecília Obiol (Barcelona, 1981) graduated in architecture from the Barcelona School of Architecture, where she was an assistant professor between 2006 and 2010 in the Cátedra Blanca directed by Carlos Ferrater and Alberto Peñín. Between 2010 and 2012 she was assistant director of the Barcelona Institute of Architecture, where she also taught in the Department of Construction Technologies. Between 2012 and 2013 she was an assistant professor at ETH-Zürich (Josep Lluís Mateo Chair). She has worked at David Chipperfield Architects (2002), Santi Vives Arquitectura (2003-2011), Flores-Prats Architects (2011-2012) and BAC ECG (2014-2015). Between 2010 and 2014 she was a member of the governing board of the College of Architects of Catalonia, and since 2011 she has been the editor of the magazine Palimpsesto, published by the Cátedra Blanca (ETSAB-UPC). She has written various articles that have been published in books and magazines, both printed and digital.
