Inside Marina City documents the residents living in the Marina City complex (1959–67) designed the architect Bertrand Goldberg (1913-1997).
Celebrating Goldberg’s original vision for affordable apartments in a central, high-density location, this revealing series of photographs provides a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of the diverse array of people and living spaces within these popular cylindrical residential towers, one the most recognizable buildings in Chicago.
The project, a collaboration between architect Iker Gil and photographer Andreas E.G. Larsson, explores the relationship between the rigorous modular framework designed by Bertrand Goldberg (there are only three unit typologies in a total of 900 apartments: efficiency units, one-bedroom apartments, and two-bedroom apartments) and the informal development of these interior spaces by residents. Unlike the vacant landscapes of traditional architectural photography, these Marina City “portraits” let the apartment dwellers speak for themselves. The result is a rich portfolio of images that pay tribute to Bertrand Goldberg’s visionary architecture and affirm his place in Chicago’s rich architectural history while placing at the fore the inhabitants who bring these spaces to life.
The buildings of Marina City designed by Bertrand Goldberg in the 60s and 70s for Chicago return from the hand of this project made by Iker Gil and Andreas EG, in which architect and photographer explore the development of the spaces and how residents have inhabited these iconic apartments along time.
