The Adult Education Centre and Children's Playground Building presented by 1004architects is the new home for the Adult School Caligrama. The building proposes not only a new educational concept with open spaces that are visually connected, but it also tries to release the largest possible area for the creation of an urban park outside. This is a new space that connects the city and a deteriorated urban area and that will become the new referenced of the town.

The Adult Education Centre and Children's Playground Building created by 1004arquitectos for the Adult School Caligrama is divided in two volumes. There is one building of geometrical character for the classrooms and other educational spaces, organized through a system of 5X5 meters modules where the areas of transit have been reduced and are visually connected to the classroom, allowing you to see the activities that take place inside them. And there is a second construction, the Playground Building, which presents a curved shape and it is integrated in the park, a leisure and educational space.

Description of the project by 1004arquitectos

The building responds to the social demand of the city of Torrelavega of an independent space to accommodate adult school Caligrama, which until now lacked its own headquarters. Located in a deteriorated urban area, the new centre intends to be a connection with the rest of the city, serving as an integration element. A new iconic building that embodies a claim of the city is created as a reference for the future of the region.

At its urban planning level, the project is understood as an access to the future Miravalles Park. This premise defines the building location and ground occupation, in an attempt to release most of the plot as a public space for the city. Versus the geometric rationality of the School, the Playground building integrates in the park as a curved shape that refers to its leisure function.

The project is the result of a reflection on educational architecture and the conventional way of understanding the educational program. Instead of as a repetition of isolated spatial elements, we propose a transparent materiality that manifests how far architecture can influence the educational model and its development. A transparency that turns the classrooms into open educational spaces, showing the teaching inside, reducing noise in the areas of transit and creating a common atmosphere that enhances the willingness of students, as has been demonstrated in numerous works.

The entire educational program is developed in a central core consisting of modules of 5x5 meters, forming a glass box that houses the administrative part on the first floor, laboratories and workshops on the ground floor and a total of 13 classrooms in the top two. The circulation spaces and the relationship areas form a ring that surrounds the compact core, simplifying the transit inside the school and improving accessibility and use. The building enhances this way its inclusiveness potential allowing the center's activity to be manifested outside and improving the necessary interaction between the school and the city.

1004arquitectos is an architectural and urban design studio founded in 2008 by Coral Miguel Alvarez, Jaime Lamúa Chueca, Pedro Lopez and Sergio Soria Quintas. The common objectives from which it emerged are focused on the development of architectural projects from a perspective that integrates the user, the urban transformation, the development of public space and the environment in which it is inserted.

Coral Álvarez de Miguel (Madrid, 1981). She studied at the E.T.S.A. Madrid. She has worked for architecture and urbanism studios since 2002. In 2007 she founded the architectural studio entornoA3 with which she won the first prize of the 2 and 3 blocks, 540 apartments, in the vicinity of the AVE station in Zaragoza.

Jaime Lamúa Chueca (Madrid, 1977). He studied at the E.T.S.A. Madrid. He has worked for architecture and urbanism studios since 2000. In 2007 he founded the architectural studio entornoA3 with which she won the first prize of the 2 and 3 blocks, 540 apartments, in the vicinity of the AVE station in Zaragoza.

Pedro López Quintas (Lugo, 1979). He studied at the E.T.S.A. Madrid and now he is studying his doctor's degree at the same University. From 2004 to 2008 he collaborated with the studio of Rafael Beneytez. In 2008 he built, together with Rafael Beneytez the Pavilion of Castilla y León for the Expo of Zaragoza.

Sergio Soria Soria (La Paz, 1977). He studied at the E.T.S.A. Madrid and at the E.N.S.A. of Montpellier. He has collaborated with architectural and urbanism studios such as Hernandez León + Álvaro Siza and Madhoc Architecture and Landscape.
