The recycled stone and tile cabin, which is not actually a cabin but much more, is one of the latest projects completed by the architecture studio Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos. The building is inserted into the landscape of the Laguna Negra y Circos Glaciares de la Sierra de Urbión Natural Park, an exceptional protected area in the province of Soria, in north-central Spain.

Steeping its roots in the constructive tradition of popular architecture in the north of Soria, the project for this interpretation centre is embodied in an integrating typology with a square floor plan, what we could call a "four-sided cabin". Within it, the main interior space is dedicated to the public use of visitors, accompanied by an information area, entrances, and a cafeteria, while the window sills, public toilets, and the area are located in the perimeter band. internal cafeteria and warehouse.
The new construction designed by Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos is organized as a square structure with a hipped roof. Inside, a functional perimeter envelops a single space covered with a pyramidal structure. This formalization tries to establish links with the archetypes of the popular architecture of the area, the "casa pinariega" and the "casa carretera", without renouncing functionality and a contemporary image at any time.

The new construction, located among the pines of the natural park, has a size similar to that of a large rock existing on the site, visually adjusting its scale to the environment.

All the perimeter walls of the new construction are made using recycled stone masonry walls, with corten steel sheeting surrounding the openings. The roofs are built with recycled Arabic tile, placed in the traditional way "channel and it cover". The carpentry, both doors and windows, are made of oak wood and corten steel. And the entire interior is built with black bakelite panels and the chimney with a black steel cauldron.

Project description by Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos

The new cabin in Laguna Negra materializes as a "four-sided cabin", which is presented in the landscape as natural architecture, sinking its roots in the constructive tradition of popular architecture in the north of Soria.

The new construction is organized as a square structure, with a hipped roof, inside which a functional perimeter is built that surrounds a single space, also square in plan, covered with a pyramidal structure. With this formalization, an attempt is made to establish links with the "pinariega house" and the "carretera house", archetypes of the popular architecture of the area, oscillating between the domestic condition of the first and the public condition of the second, without renouncing in any way moment to the contemporary condition of construction that must be functional and easy to maintain.

Within this organization, the main interior space accommodates public use, information, entrances, and cafeteria, while the window thresholds, public toilets, and the internal cafeteria and storage area are located in the perimeter band.

The new four-sided cabin is located among pine trees, in the immediate vicinity of a large rock existing on the site, with a scale similar to that of the cabin, which allows the new construction to visually adjust its scale to the natural environment, controlling with it the visual impact of the new architecture.

All the perimeter walls of the new construction are made using recycled stone masonry walls, with corten steel sheeting surrounding the openings. The roofs are built with recycled Arab tile, placed in the traditional way "undertiles and overtiles". The carpentry, both doors and windows, are made of oak wood and corten steel. And the entire interior is built with black bakelite panels and the chimney with a black steel cauldron.
