Colombian architecture studio, El Equipo Mazzanti, based in Bogotá, led by the architect Giancarlo Mazzanti, was commissioned to renovate the municipal stadium of Barranquilla, the Capital of the Atlantic department of Colombia.
They propose to reform the Romelio Martínez Stadium renovatin the facilities so that they comply with the regulations required to host the Central American and Caribbean Games there, and hosting events such as the famous Carnival that is held in the capital.

The remodeling of the Romelio Martínez stadium designed by El Equipo Mazzanti aims to establish a relationship between the interior of the stadium and the public space outside and allow for a greater diversity of uses, while trying to maintain its historical value.
The north tribune is restored as it is declared a Site of Cultural Interest. The rest of the stands designed with different inclinations and founded on the combination of repetitive and regular elements are based on a diagram of growth in time and can be expanded later.
It is an open project, which increases its capacity through the fragmentation of its shapes, allowing the ventilation in the sports center to improve and at the same time generating a smaller scale, which also serves to integrate it gently into its environment.

Project description by El Equipo Mazzanti
The Romelio Martínez stadium is the current municipal stadium of Barranquilla, of greater antiquity as a stage for professional soccer in the city, and the old headquarters of the most representative Barranquilla clubs in the first B Colombian category.
Due to the construction period and architectural characteristics of the tribune called "shadow", which corresponds to the north grandstand, the stadium was declared a National Cultural Interest (BIC).
However, the scenario did not comply with the current rules for holding sporting events, for the area of support and construction pathologies (dressing rooms, mixed zone, administration of the stadium and the event, public services (bathrooms and trade), evacuation, NSR standards -10 and NTC-1500, among others). Especially the playing field, which determines the layout of the bleachers, is oriented east-west, contrary to the guidance recommended by FIFA (north-south) that ensures the visual comfort of the players, taking into account the route of the sun.
With the intention of enabling the Romelio Martínez, and adding it to the accredited sports venues for the Central American and Caribbean Games, it is proposed to restore the patrimonial tribune, correctly orientate the playing field, provide sufficient areas to celebrate sporting events, and renovate the public space adjacent to the stadium.
In the proposal of the design team, the importance of the existing building, representative of an era of architecture in Colombia (shadow tribune), and taking into account the original values of the building, a new distribution to the interior, allowing both to the public of the events, as to interested visitors, to appreciate its architecture.
The implementation of the playing field is designed with the appropriate north-south orientation, with a slight inclination of 9 ° towards the west, for the correct visual of the spectators who are located in the north tribune ("shadow"). With this new orientation, stands are located designed with the standards required by the norm for sports venues, and the support program for the sporting event is distributed in the useful area under the bleachers.
Finally, the topography resulting from the space released by the old stands, throws a significant difference in height, approximately nine meters between the highest and lowest part of the lot, the court being an intermediate level between both, which is used in the design to integrate the liberated and existing public space with the sports program, generating grandstands outside the stadium, areas for outdoor training and support areas such as shops, public services, etc., added to new green areas that allow integrating controlled way, visually the public space with the stadium.

Giancarlo Mazzanti (1963, Barranquill, Colombia) is the director of El Equipo de Mazzanti. He studied Architecture at University of Javeriana in Bogotá, 1987, with PhD in History and Theory in Architecture and Industrial Design, 1991, at University of Florence, Italy.
He has been professor at University of Javeriana, Andes and Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá. He has participated as speaker at University of Princeton, Pratt, Yale, Berkeley, Venize, Monterrey, Buenos Aires, Católica del Perú among others.
He has been awarded as winner of the XX Bienal Colombiana de Arquitectura in the public spaces category in 2006, in the Bienal Iberoamericana in the Best Architecture Building category in 2008 and in the Bienal Panamericana de Arquitectura in the architecture design category in 2008.
