Founded in 2001 by Josean Ruiz Esquíroz and Nacho Ruiz Allén, Zon-e is dedicated to research and experimentation. After stints teaching at Columbia and the Buffalo School of Architecture, Esquíroz now works as an associate teacher at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid, while Allén is finishing his PhD. Their RSN House hugs the ground using Vierendeel beams to free up the lowest level. Courtyards bring light into the multifunctional basement, and the fluid arrangement of spaces in and out affords privacy, while giving the prospect of views.
For this year's Architects Directory, Wallpaper* selected 20 of the world's best emerging architects, giving each an open brief to design the ultimate rural retreat. The 20 houses were designed to be flexible and functional, but also formally and technically innovative, sitting on an isolated countryside site. The only proviso was the need for the homes to touch the ground lightly, with minimal disruption to the landscape.
The architects condensed their visions into a series of beautifully executed models, on show at the Architecture Foundation in London until 14th July.
