MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo) has completed the expansion project that was led by the Brazilian architectural firm METRO Arquitectos. The firm began restoration work on the building designed by Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) in 2014 (recovering the exhibition stands) and began the expansion process in 2019 with the transformation of what will be the Pietro Maria Bardi building (the first director of MASP).

Opening to the public in March 2025 will mark the most significant transformation in the history of the museum after its move from Rua 7 de Abril, at the headquarters of Diários Associados, to Avenida Paulista in 1968, when the museum moved to the building designed by Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), which has become a symbol of modern architecture worldwide in the 20th century.

The museum will be renamed: MASP - Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, about its founder (1892-1968), who with Pietro Maria Bardi and Lina bo Bardi completed the homage to the founding trio of MASP.

The extension designed by METRO Arquitectos, a studio led by Martin Corullon and Gustavo Cedroni, has connected (under Prof. Otavio Mendes Street) and transformed a residential block adjacent to MASP, known as the ten-story Dumont-Adams, which was completed in 1958 and donated to the institution in 2006.

Due to physical limitations, currently of the 11 thousand works between paintings, sculptures, objects, photographs, videos and materials from different periods, MASP only displays a little more than 1% of its collection. The new building has 14 floors and 7,821 m², which will double the operational area from 10,485 m² to 21,863 m² as of March 2025.

To achieve these dimensions, in addition to the underground connection, the existing concrete structure of the annexe building was partially demolished and its height was increased to 14 floors, with exhibition galleries almost 5 meters high.

The Pietro building has completely transparent floors close to the ground, in line with the free space, and the upper floors are covered with perforated and corrugated metal sheets, which will create a monolithic image without hindering the appreciation of the landscape and the entry of natural light, through strategically located openings, according to the needs of the internal spaces.

In addition to five new galleries that will add 66% to the museum's current exhibition space, the Pietro building will include conservation laboratories, a reception area, classrooms, two multipurpose rooms, storage, loading docks, a restaurant and a cafeteria.

The project includes sustainable solutions, reducing the carbon footprint and achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. In addition, the double façade, made of metal mesh, allows the formation of a layer of air between the building and the exterior façade, protecting the building from solar radiation, shading the windows and facilitating the reduction of the internal thermal load and energy consumption.

Project description by METRO Arquitectos

The expansion project of the São Paulo Museum of Art is part of the process initiated in 2014, in which a new management of the institution promoted the gradual recovery of the building designed by Lina Bo Bardi. This process, in which METRO has been involved since the beginning, resulted in the return of the Crystal Easels, the museum’s original exhibition system, new exhibition systems, and various infrastructure interventions such as security, air conditioning, and restoration. Our involvement in this process allowed us to contribute a proposal for the occupation of the building adjacent to MASP – the Dumont Adams building, completed in 1958 and donated to MASP in 2006 – whose works had been halted in 2012.

The new architectural project, by METRO ARQUITETOS, builds upon the project by Architect Júlio Neves and proposes the partial demolition of the existing concrete structure and the construction of an underground connection between the two buildings, allowing for the full functional integration of the complex, both technically and publicly. The expansion of exhibition areas, public reception, and operational facilities – such as art handling, a new conservation and restoration laboratory, and dedicated classroom space – is included. The construction will increase the museum’s area by 6,945 m² with new gallery floors, classrooms, technical reserve, restoration laboratory, restaurant, shop, and event areas, expanding the activities carried out today and increasing visitor capacity.

The new volume of the building consists of a regular rectangular prism on a transparent base with public access, creating a discreet background for the main building. A skin of perforated metal unifies the facades and allows for the control of lighting and temperature required for the display of artworks. The project employs the most advanced technologies available for museum air conditioning, lighting, and security systems. The materials used – exposed concrete, steel, glass, and stone, together with industrialized systems – allow for the configuration of spaces suitable for contemporary museum standards and reference the characteristics of MASP, ensuring the architectural integration of the complex.

Visitor access is provided both from Professor Otávio Mendes Street – where the museum’s ticket office and shop are located – and from Paulista Avenue. In this space, the public will have access to services of a restaurant/café. The first floor features a multipurpose area, with an indoor space prepared to host exhibitions and events, and a terrace overlooking the Lina Bo Bardi Building. The spaces dedicated exclusively to exhibitions occupy 5 floors with a ceiling height of 5 meters. They are spacious and flexible areas that can be easily adapted to each exhibition project.

METRO. Founded in 2000 in São Paulo, METRO works in different scales, from temporary installations to urban interventions. The work allies a modernist architectural tradition, resulting from the frequent collaboration with the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha [Pritzker Prize 2006], to a practice which complies with contemporary issues. On the one hand, we look after an architecture in which material organization serves the public use of the built spaces; on the other, we look upon the importance of formal speculation and research on materials, besides an approach that tries to recognize and bring solutions to the necessities and desires of the wide network of agents involved in the production of space.

MARTIN CORULLON. Trained as an Architect at The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at The University of São Paulo [FAUUSP]. Holds a Masters degree from the same institution. Founded METRO ARQUITETOS ASSOCIADOS in 2000. Since 1994 has been a close collaborator of Paulo Mendes da Rocha. During 2008 and 2009 he worked at Foster+Partners in London.

GUSTAVO CEDRONI. Founder. Qualified as an Architect at FAAP in 2000. Worked with Pedro Paulo de Melo Saraiva in 1999, and with Eduardo Colonelli in 2000.
