We are pleased to introduce the new project of ABDArchitetti, this team of architects led by Camillo Botticini, have shared images with METALOCUS from their last work, a sports center for swimming. The compact volume, built of Klinker, is crossed by cuts leading light to the different pools that are part of the complex.

Project description by ABDArchitetti

The project for the realization of the Brescia’s swimming center, is located in the district of Mompiano in the north part of the city, near the football stadium.

The volume is characterized as an urban architecture, open to a specific relationship with the sorroundings, against the logic of sports building seen as ubiquitous object, placeable in each site.

The architectural theme is expressed by treating the compact block of the brown Klinker (84 x 42 x 9 meters ) through a sequence of excavated fronts by changing his character in relations between the interior spaces and the different conditions of external reference.

This deep cuts cross the volume bringing the light inside the pool spaces, building precise visual relationships between the differents parts of the spaces.

Between the cuts of the west side there are the two staircases that connect the locker room with the public entrance on the south side of the swimmig pool placed on north aprt of the complex.

The distribution organizes three functional parts: a main big room with a pool for water polo (33 x 25 m) equipped with a 800 seat grandstand, a nucleus of changing rooms on three levels, (athletes, users and fitness) and a room with two small pools for courses.

The main room has a large window facing the north outside lawn and to the east side it opens toward a patio with big bamboo’s plants. On the south side, facing the street, behind the grandstand, a glass wall, illuminates the underground technical spaces.

The west internal elevation, always of the big pool room, presents two vertical cuts that connect them to the room with the smaller pools and the public entrance.

The west block where there are the locker rooms and two small pools for the courses, an horizontal window continues the same, of the big room and runs around the corners creating a visual continuity that connects the small pool hall with that of water polo. On the east side the loggia at the first floor, opens the gym to the external swimming pools, while another double-height loggia with a bar on the ground floor is in direct relation to the south public entrance.

The Center has 3261 sqm of covered area, with a total of  6260 sqm and a 12,000 sqm outdoor  with three swimming and learning pools.

ABDArchitetti was established in 2008 by the fusion of Camillo Botticini’s and Giulia de Appolonia’s architecture studios. This collaboration arises from a substratum of interests and similar education, taking advantage of the complementary formative paths and professional experiences, as well as a common interest in working abroad. In this research for synthesis, a “reactive” architecture comes to life based on its conceptual content, giving birth to original and creative solutions.

Camillo Botticini was born in Brescia in 1965. He graduated in architecture from Milan Polytechnic University – facoltà di Architettura, Politecnico di Milano – in 1990, under professor Sergio Crotti with whom he collaborated as an assistant for ten years. In 2003 he obtained his research doctorate (Ph.D.) in Architectonic and Urban Design at the Milan Polytechnic University. His Dissertation was published by Club Milano, entitled ‘Relazioni, progetto ed identità dell’architettura contemporanea’ and became a University professor at Milan Polytechnic University where he still teaches Urban Planning and Architectonic Design. He began his professional career in 1991, collaborating with S. Crotti, G. Canali and G. Belotti.  In 1993, opened his own private studio in Brescia.

Giulia de Appolonia was born in Pordenone, Italy in 1969. She enrolled the Faculty of Architecture, Milan Polytechnic University (Facoltà di architettura del Politecnico di Milano) in 1988. In 1991 was awarded the Erasmus study abroad scholarship to attend FAULT, Lisbon and in 1993 was awarded the Comett scholarship. She graduated in architecture with honors (cum laude) in 1994. She also collaborated for several years with Carrilho da Graça in Lisbon, where she had the opportunity to manage large scale projects for the public sector, developing works of great complexity and showing her coordination and management capacities as a team leader.
