Description of the exhibition by Moneo Brock Studio
The exhibition Sun/Moon, at _2B - an extension of the architecture studio Moneo Brock, consists of a series of sketches and studies on paper by the American artist Nicholas Woods. Using pure pigment powders directly on paper, Woods explores optical phenomena related to color fields and their possible relationships with the perception of our celestial - solar surroundings.
Taking the circle as symbolic of a singularity, Sun/Moon gives rise to an enigmatic dichotomy - the work can be seen formally as pure geometric abstraction and, simultaneously, as an absolute figuration. This is a figuration that links to the broader discourse of Woods' work and its exploration of the human psyche, in which landscape is a metaphor, used to reveal or define different mental states.
Parallel to Sun/Moon, Nicholas Woods is showing the series Isla at the gallery Slowtrack (C/ Cañizares, 12, Madrid). With Isla, the artist investigates the nature of visual perception through a group of disquieting yet beautiful paintings of what appear to be nocturnal landscapes, in an unusual range of blacks, grays, and blues.
The work of Nicholas Woods (1971, Lynchburg, VA, USA) has been the object of numerous exhibitions in USA and Europe, among others at, CAC Málaga, Málaga, Spain (2015, 2004); Slowtrack, Madrid (2015); Tim Sheward Projects, London (2013); The Royal Standard, Liverpool (2009); Es Baluard Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo, Mallorca (2012); Galería T20, Murcia (2009, 2010); Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco (2006); Galería Maior, Mallorca (2001, 2004, 2008); Vacío 9, Madrid (2005, 2003); and has been shown at multiple art fairs like PULSE, New York; NEXT, Chicago; VOLTA, Basel; NADA, Miami; and ARCO, Madrid.
