A new exhibition at the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park City looks at an array of groundbreaking factory buildings, mostly from the last century.

"The show manages to capture a time when manufacturing was a central part of the urban experience, as well as the extraordinary range of invention that went into trying to make a modern factory an efficient and humane place to work," Nicolai Ouroussoff writes.

"It's the quirkier, more off-beat examples that grab your attention, not the classics. One of my favorites is Giacamo Matte-Trucco's 1923 Lingotto factory in Turin."
