Models, black and white photographs, videos, plans, maps and drawings show the work of Chilean architect Mathias Klotz. He has solved different typologies using modern compositional levels that defy gravity rules and through the demonization of the client to create buildings are integrated in their surroundings but possess however a universal spirit.
An exhibition and publication introduces us to his work from the commission of a project until the end of it. This exhibition reveals the story behind the design process and how Klotz does and thinks architecture, through language and the humans that inhabit these spaces. The projects arise opportunities, moments, casualties and risks, as the author narrates throughout the book. The shape of the box dominates over the hill in his own house and relates to highly spatial and constructive poetics of geometrical concepts that adapt to time, geography and style.
Thus, Klotz invites us to rethink the essence of the discipline and the evolution of his work through small-scale projects such as House Klotz 1991, design facades, large scale buildings such as the H building in China where he experimented with typologies, materials and compositional elements facing each project from a pragmatic and rational position to take them as it should be as explained in the book.
The exhibition Poetics of Boxes arrives from Berlin and is now held at Victor Saavedra gallery in Barcelona. It is an opportunity for us to face the concept of the box. Sometimes pure platonic and mystical, sometimes functional like a cereal box, or complex as Schrödinger's quantum box. In this publication and solo exhibition, the box is exposed as a strong and attractive response to the eternal living matter.
