"Nikola Tesla’s figure is a generator of culture and inspiration." Maria Santoyo - co-curator of the exhibition together with Miguel A. Delgado - reminded us that Tesla is not just a curious person or the father of technology but mainly a milestone in the history of innovation.
Miguel A. Delgado is the author of the biographical book "Tesla y la conspiración de la luz" (Tesla and the conspiracy of light) which revives the figure of Tesla. Delgado emphasized the fact that this exhibition was entirely developed in Spain.
"Tesla - scientist, inventor and engineer - embodies much of the current moment in which we live." The impact of his ideas on art and pop culture tells us that invention processes have much in common with artistic creation.
Fernando Muñoz has been commissioned to design the exhibition, in which minimizing the environmental impact has played a major role in line with Tesla’s thinking who emphasized, already in the first half of the 20th century, the importance of making good use of resources.
Tesla himself guides us through the show through various texts. Santoyo explained that they seek to show Tesla's life through his own voice and powerful graphic icons. “It is an image diorama with different conceptual layers.”
The exhibition wants to attract all audiences and explain Tesla's inventions in a way that they can be understood by everyone. We’d like to point out as well the section devoted to important forgotten Spanish scientists such as Mónico Sánchez, inventor and electrical engineer.
The exhibition concludes with a conceptual visual art work entitled "Visions" and based on the texts in which Tesla himself described the visions and the color schemes he saw when he was about to invent something.
A book entitled "Teslapedia" was also published by Turner on the occasion of the exhibition. It is not exactly a catalogue but it does follow the exhibition’s structure. The book includes an application called the TESLApp for "augmented reality" which allows the reader to expand the contents of the book with online multimedia content.
Multiple activities will also be held, including a micro-theatre play by Victor Coyote, a radio programme and educational activities for both teachers and families. You can take a look at the workshops and activities schedule here.
'Nikola Tesla. His is the future' opened today at Fundación Telefónica in Madrid. A journey through Nikola Tesla’s past, his mind and the future he envisaged, up to the present time.
