To pay tribute to this work centenary, Galeries Lafayette invites two emblematic figures of contemporary art: the architect Rem Koolhaas and the artist Yann Kersalé.
Galeries Lafayette, Paris's iconic department store, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its famed Cupola, a symbol of the store's commitment to culture. OMA has been invited to study this centennial cultural journey. Conceived by AMO, 1912-2012: Chroniques d'un parcours créatif is an exhibition reflecting the store's unique formula of mixing culture with shopping under the iconic stained glass, built in 1912 by architect Ferdinand Chanut and the master glassmaker Jacques Gruber.
By immersing themselves in the archives of the Galeries Lafayette, AMO has reconstructed a chronicle of mutations of this legendary department store. Through the history of fashion and commerce, it is also one of France tells us that this chronology.
Galeries Lafayette has been, over the years, a stage and an observatory for the links between fashion, retail, economics, and art, but also the socio-economic history of France.
To extend this anniversary, a book published by La Martinière traces the history of the store and remember how this mythical place created in the heart of Paris, a theater that is fashionable French and foreign ownership, and remains, over the years, a source of inspiration for artists.
The exhibition will take place in the Galerie des Galeries, in the iconic Paris flagship store of Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann.
