The renovation of this home in Madrid, designed by Idearch architecture studio and led by Joaquín Mosquera and Syra Abella, seeks elements of minimal materiality, but maximum capacity to transform the interior life of housing.

The projects designed by Idearch work with a continuous wooden element that serves as a staircase, work table and double height shelf, in addition to two polycarbonate and steel panels that help the user to have multiple options in the internal uses of the home.

Description of project by Idearch

With this renovation in Madrid, we present the second case study of our serie “MULTIPLYING ARCHITECTURES”, that have the goal of finding elements of a minimum materiality, but maximum transformation of internal life of the house.

In this project, we have worked only with two architectonic elements that look for a complete versatility and complex utilization of space: The first is a continuous element of wood that serves as stair, working table or shelf with upper views over the living room. The second one is a system of two panels of plastic and steel that help the user to have multiple options in internal uses of the house, thanks to their double translucent and opaque character.

The classical space of the traditional “loft” is transformed so in a space of maximum versatility, multiplying internal functions of spaces. With few elements, and a tight budget, we get the high adaptability…

Idearch is a multidisciplinary study founded by Joaquín Mosquera and Syra Abella, that develops projects of multiple scales and programs. His clients include a wide range of both private and public entities, with multiple interests that range from housing to public and institutional spaces. Syra Abella and Joaquín Mosquera understand the practice and theory of architecture as inseparable parts, relating to the field of publications and academia, having been professors at ETSAM and UFV and having published in different magazines and books. They regularly participate in exhibitions and research in various ways, such as Ph.D. and Research Groups at various universities.

Syra Abella graduated in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. As co-founder of idearch, she has developed numerous projects and won various architecture awards and competitions, being published in a wide range of specialized media. She also deepened her interests in the field of architectural visualization and digital representation in New York for two years, and directs idearch's infographics and video area.

Joaquín Mosquera is a Doctor of Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and professor of Architectural Projects at the Francisco de Vitoria University. He obtained the Caja Madrid Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship to study and research at Columbia University (New York), developing in parallel his interest in photography with renowned photographers. Within idearch, he has developed very different projects and won awards in competitions, being published in numerous media.
