At last, it has arrived. Months ago (July 12, 2016) we published the information transmitted to us, announcing the inauguration of the the exhibition "Camera and model. Fotografía de maquetas de arquitectura en España, 1925–1970" in September in the exhibition hall of the Archery of Nuevos Ministerios. The exhibition was initially conceived as a part of PHE16 and had a catalog published since July. In the end, it has been carried out just now and inaugurated in the ICO Museum yesterday, the 16th of February.

This volume emerges as exhibition catalog held in the exhibition hall of Fundación ICO (Madrid), within the framework of the PHotoEspaña festival. A project developed under the direction of his principal investigator and curator, the architect and professor Iñaki Bergera, as continuity to the works and initiatives carried out in the Photography and Modern Architecture in Spain (FAME) research project.

La Fábrica starts a new project paying tribute to the photograph of models as a means of architectural representation, a publication that rescued more than a hundred original photographs of authors like Català-Roca, Kindel, Pando, Llado, Maspons-Ubiña Gomez or Massats, with works by architects such as Aizpurúa, De la Sota or Higueras. Again, this publication makes for the homonymous exhibition catalog, within the Official Section of PHotoEspaña 2016 festival, curated by Iñaki Bergera.

La Fábrica publishes Camera and model. Photography of architectural models in Spain. 1925-1970, a book that pays for the first time as a whole tribute to two important architectural representation systems: the layout and photography.

This volume rescue over one hundred original photographs of models of outstanding projects from the Spanish twentieth-century modernity when the first comprehensive marketing daguerreotype turns one hundred seventy-five years. The book focuses attention on a particular aspect of the representation of architecture, present in the practice of this art since immemorial time, the models.

The architects use photography to describe what has already been built, and in this regard it’s noteworthy that many of those who were part of the modern movement, here and elsewhere, were great amateur photographers. But they used the models’ photograph in a similar way than how the doctors use the imaging diagnostic, to check and direct their future actions without costly interventions.

Camera and model. Photography of architectural models in Spain. 1925-1970, serves as an analysis of the presentation of architectural representing objects. Iñaki Bergera, Davide Deriu, Juan Carlos Oliver and Eduardo Prieto offer a theoretical perspective on these practices. Topics such as photography of the models, their views, the staging and visual control or the relationship between the architect and the model are addressed throughout the pages of the volume.

The book takes place in a total of 208 pages in which 200 illustrations of authors like Català-Roca, Kindel, Pando, Llado, Maspons-Ubiña Gomez or Massats are included, and architects like Aizpurúa, De la Sota or Higueras, as well as several original models portrayed in photographs.

Iñaki Bergera (Vitoria, 1972) es arquitecto, fotógrafo y profesor titular en la Universidad de Zaragoza. Becado por la Fundación ‘la Caixa’, se graduó con premio extraordinario en el Master in Design Studies de Harvard University (2002). 

Ha sido investigador principal del proyecto “Fotografía y arquitectura moderna en España” y comisario de dos exposiciones sobre el tema en el Museo ICO de Madrid (PHE 2014 y PHE 2016).

Autor y editor de más de una veintena de libros, tiene una amplia producción científica de artículos y ponencias internacionales. En 2001 realizó estudios de fotografía en la School of Visual Arts de Harvard y, desde entonces, ha desarrollado un trabajo fotográfico personal en torno a las relaciones entre fotografía, arquitectura y espacio urbano y natural, plasmado en diversas exposiciones individuales como América, paisaje urbano (2006), A Tale of Two Cities (2008), En el paisaje (2010), Twentysix (Abandoned) Gasoline Stations (SCAN Tarragona 2014, PHE 2015 y MUN 2018) y Empty Parking Spaces (2019) y en colectivas como La creación del paisaje contemporáneo (DKV-Alcobendas, 2016) o Unfinished (Bienal de Venecia, 2016).
