The Idea.
Drawings and models are the cornerstones of architectural design. Spaces are created, concepts are depicted, and thoughts are expressed in the language of drawings and models - sometimes in concert, sometimes separately, but always indispensable to the genesis of an architectural project.
After almost fourteen years of organizing architecture exhibitions, la galerie d’architecture is now offering a new way to appreciate drawings and models. Taken from their original context, relieved of their pedagogical function, drawings and models can be viewed differently and considered, if the spectator so desires, works of art.
The Limited Editions.
The great architect and 1992 Pritzker Prize winner Álvaro Siza has agreed to inaugurate this exceptional collection of architectural drawings. He transports us into his sensitive universe through ten drawings that explore the theme of anchoring, or the way in which the architect reacts to a territory. The lines are sure, the composition is harmonious, the idea is clear. An architectural style is born, anchored to the land, dialoguing with the horizon, responding to the sky.
Each drawing represents an emblematic project conceived by Álvaro Siza: the sublime, ocean-side swimming pool at Leça da Palmeira and the School of Architecture at Porto are but two examples. Álvaro Siza’s drawings will be issued in three limited editions of signed and numbered prints. The first series will take the form of an original drawing presented in a solid birch box designed by Álvaro Siza. The following series will consist of numbered and signed, or just numbered prints contained within canvas boxes.
Three young architects provide dialogue with the pen strokes of Álvaro Siza. Models designed by the agency Tank and by Camilo Rebelo express another way of situating architecture, of materializing a thought, of achieving anchorage in a territory. A video "drawn" by Nicolas Reymond responds to Siza’s work, a homage and another vision or approach, for architectures for a new century. These pieces will be available in a limited edition.
To coincide with this launch, LA GALERIE d’architecture is organizing an Outdoor Exhibition of Architectural Drawings and Models.
