In a high-density building environment in the central district of the Chinese city of Shenzhen, the architecture practice Vector Architects has designed the Liyuan Foreign Language Primary School. The site, which was previously occupied by a large number of factories and industrial spaces dedicated to the disposal of land, has been transformed over time into a lush forest that distinguishes the district from the rest of the city.

The project aims to maximize the conservation of the existing forest and its vegetation, while seeking to explore new typologies and spatial innovations for the school's architecture. Supported by the natural elements characteristic of the environment, the school generates unique pedagogical spaces, considering the physical space of a school as part of the education it provides.

To reduce interference with the existing environment by the new buildings that make up the school, the classrooms proposed by Vector Architects are located around the perimeter, enclosing the small forest on their north, south and east sides. Public spaces are presented within the relatively compact mass of the building in the form of large semi-exterior terraces, offering shelter, shade and natural ventilation to the complex.

An external layer of precast concrete shading panels functions as solar protection for the building, responding to the harsh Shenzhen sun, filtering sunlight at high angles, achieving soft natural light illumination, while also offering good views of the classrooms and public spaces.

Project description by Vector Architects

Liyuan Foreign Language Primary School is located in the heart of Futian, Shenzhen’s central district. Densely surrounded by buildings, on site there is a leafy “little forest”. Upon entering the forest, one’s eyes are instantly drawn to the interwoven canopies sweeping above like clustering umbrellas. Two decades ago, this area was occupied by factories and warehouses, which were later relocated as the city developed, and the site had then been used for soil disposal. Today, standing over sixty feet tall, banyan trees planted on the resulting mound have grown into this small, precious forest. The design proposal aims to maximize the preservation of the existing forest and its terrain, while seeking to explore new typologies and spatial innovations for campus architecture.

Embedded within the urban fabric, this little forest encapsulates the memory of Shenzhen’s urbanization process over the last few decades. The meaningful preservation of this forest will help achieve a sense of continuity in the evolution of the city and its urban spaces. Endowed with this greenery, this campus will create unique pedagogical spaces. Natural elements like sunlight, rain, wind, and the change of seasons can all be experienced here in the most tangible way, which will create distinct and special childhood memories for the students.

Our first challenge was to address the onerous site conditions for the design of a school with thirty-six classrooms. Restricted in size and by the existing trees, the site also has an over sixteen-foot height difference from north to south. A comb-shaped layout, which is commonly seen in conventional school designs, would not be appropriate for this project, as the goal is to ensure maximized preservation of the little forest. Through a series of iterative studies, a compact vertical massing strategy was assessed to be the most suitable approach, minimized in footprint while enclosing the site from three sides. To reduce the interference in the existing site by the new buildings, classrooms are positioned at the perimeter, enclosing the little forest on the north, south, and east. Sports facilities that are often large in scale are reorganized through a vertical arrangement of sports grounds dispersed on the rooftops and throughout the semi-subterranean spaces. 

The running track is elevated, with only its structural elements touching the ground. Nested within the loop of the track is the little forest, offering continuous canopies right above where students run and wander. We wanted the building to be fully adaptive to the local climate and for the architecture to radiate a charm that belongs only to southern China. Therefore, generously sized semi-outdoor public terrace spaces are devised within the relatively compact building massing. Offering ample shelter and shade, as well as sufficient natural ventilation, they form a vital place on campus that facilitates activities. These terrace spaces are plugged into the running track at various moments, with openings looking toward outside, through which one can catch a glimpse of the city when jogging. People on the street can also look inside and see the little forest via these openings. Arranged horizontally, terraces, corridors, and the running track are at once connected and juxtaposed with vertically distributed sports grounds and circulation spaces. Together they create an integrated multi-dimensional spatial system for campus activities.

On the facade, we introduced an external layer of shading panels using precast concrete. Widely adopted as an energy saving device, external shading is an effective method to resist Shenzhen’s harsh sun by filtering out high-angle sunlight, making the environment softly lit with natural light while affording good views for classrooms and public spaces.

We believe that the physical space of a school is a part of education. With the little forest nestled in her arms, this campus looks to foster a positive relationship with the city of Shenzhen and the children who are to study at Liyuan Foreign Language Primary School for six years.

Gong Dong, was born on Chinese New Year's Day 1972 (February 15), into an intellectual family in Beijing. His parents were professors. His father taught hydraulic engineering at Tsinghua University, and his mother was a chemist at Beijing Jiaotong University. His birth falls in a year marked by different events that will mark his generation: the death of Liang Sicheng, one of the key founders of Chinese architectural education, the historic visit of US President Richard Nixon and the announced return of Deng Xiaoping to the political scene.

His family surname "Dong" comes from Jinghai County in Tianjin, a place not far from Beijing, and if we look back his ancestors can be found in Hongtong County in Shanxi Province, in northern China. His name "Gong" refers to "power" in hydraulic engineering. In common usage, "Gong" also means "academic performance and achievement."

Gong Dong received Bachelor & Master of Architecture from Tsinghua University, followed by a diploma from the University of Illinois where he received the Master of Architecture. He also had an exchange experience at the Technical University of Munich. During his study in America, Gong Dong received several awards including the Excellence Award from the Steedman Fellowship International Architectural Design Competition, 2000; First Prize from the American Institute of Architects Chicago Chapter’s Student Design Competition,2001 and the Excellence Award from Malama Learning Centre International Architecture Design Competition,2002. Before establishing his practice he worked for Soloman Cordwell Buenz & Associates in Chicago, then at Richard Meier & Partners and Steven Holl Architects in New York.

VECTOR ARCHITECTS was founded in 2008, in Beijing. During seven years of practice, we have always believed that design needs to confront problems, and it should be the attitude an architect ought to possess. Instead of enforcing the architect's self-consciousness or following icons and superficial forms, a good design has to respect the existing environment with the support of logic and reason. The contemporary Chinese design industry today is rather blundering in that the rapid production and pursuit of landmarks in height, size and form have become mainstream.

Architects no longer devote their efforts to the fundamental and substantial truth of architecture. In this environment, the persistence of confronting problems remains essential and crucial. In every project, Vector Architects is devoted to discovering the unrevealing relationship and various possibilities in the existing context. Through their design, they create new perceptions and experiences, which are exclusive to each project. The sense of "being here" is uniquely established and reflected in the percipient's emotions and actions. Therefore, space, being the vessel of living, has formed an irreplaceable connection between place and experience.
