Architecture practice UNA Barbara e Valentim was commissioned to design Onze House. It is in a privileged location south of the coast of Alagoas, one of the twenty-six states of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The plot where it was built is close to the beach, which allows you to enjoy beautiful views of the shore.

Several of the facades that make up the house are defined by canopies that provide solar protection, accompanied by large overhanging terraces. Large windows are set back inwards, allowing intense lighting and a wide view outside but guaranteeing shading of interior rooms.
Architecture studio UNA Babara e Valentim defined the design as two volumes on two floors with independent programs. The volume of the lower floor is larger and contains an interior garden with endemic species surrounded by rooms with various functions, services and guest rooms. The upper volume houses the family accommodation.

The house's location close to the sea caused the architects to decide to completely glaze the living rooms and dining rooms, and sit on the lower floor, to allow a view of the landscape and garden. The lightness of the glass contrasts with the heaviness of the exposed concrete structure on the upper floor is covered with a wooden finish.

Project description by UNA Babara e Valentim

Located on the south coast of Alagoas, facing the sea, Casa Onze is delicately inserted into this landscape. The house is organized around a large internal garden with species typical of the region's biome. A large marquee that can accommodate a variety of uses defines the access to the house. Circulation on the ground floor is always through balcony spaces, which openly integrate different environments.

The program is distributed in two volumes: a horizontal slab, which contains the internal garden, social areas, services and guest accommodation, and a raised volume with family accommodation, which enjoys extensive views of the beach. A large void above the living room integrates the spaces on both floors. The living and dining rooms, completely transparent and protected by large verandas, dialogue simultaneously with the two scales of landscape present in the project: the extensive beach with its sea views, and the contained scale of the internal garden. The layout of the program maximized natural lighting and ventilation for all the rooms, and the systematic use of the verandas as transitional spaces was fundamental to ensuring the comfort of the house. The integration of the pool into the volume of the house offers areas of shade also in the water. The roofs are occupied by gardens, in a way that integrates the volumes into the natural landscape.

Una Barbara e Valentim is an architecture studio based in São Paulo that works on a variety of scales and programs. It was born from the association of Fernanda Barbara and Fabio Valentim. The studio dedicates its work to architecture as an instrument for qualifying public and private spaces designed for a better collective or individual life.

The city of São Paulo, where the partners come from, is the matrix of the issues that guide their work. One of the largest metropolitan regions in the world, the city has been the territory of reflection, with the development of projects, residential buildings, large facilities and public spaces, as well as ephemeral projects, especially for visual arts exhibitions. New opportunities have also led to projects in other cities and states in the country, in regions with different densities of occupation.

The parallel work in the academic field over the last 20 years strengthens the investigative aspect of the professional activity while returning this practical experience to the teaching environment.

Fernanda Barbara and Fabio Valentim founded Una Arquitetos in 1996 with other partners, which has participated in four editions of the Venice Architecture Biennale (2002, 2006, 2014 and 2018). At the invitation of the Lisbon Triennale, they developed a housing project in Recife, which was exhibited at the show in 2010. The firm has received several awards for its projects and works. Among them, the Santa Cruz Biennial Grand Prize, the IAB/SP 2021 Prize, the Saint-Gobain 2021 Prize and the Roberto Aflalo Prize from AsBEA, all in recognition of the Sesc Parque D. Pedro II project in São Paulo's Historic Center.
