Chilean architecture studio Searle Puga Arquitectos, directed by a couple of architects Rodrigo Searle Gonzalez and Marcela Puga Wolf, was commissioned to design this house in a neighbourhood in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The house is characterized by being located at one of the ends of the plot and organized around a series of patios that allows it to generate a constant dialogue between the interior and the exterior. Actually, these "impluvium" of light become the activators of the inner movement. As architects comment, “Dwelling implies movement and stillness”.
The project proposed by Searle Puga Arquitectos contracts its internal permeability with the hermetic image that it shows to the outside, accentuated by the dark colour of the concrete which in turn highlights the colour of the vegetation.

The access is done sequentially, with small patios and gardens, which rank the places, an intelligent and very effective baroque process, which through these intermediate spaces between the outside and the inside, prepares the visitor to enter. The organization of these spaces reduces the spatial perception of those who access the house to decompress it inside, scenographically increasing the perception of the interior space for the newcomer.

Once inside, the infinite routes around the central patio on both floors, the two stairs located on one side, the climb to the roof terrace make dwelling, inhabiting this "domus" an experience.

Project description by Searle Puga Arquitectos

Dwelling implies movement and stillness. In this house, we wanted to give the same hierarchy to both the places of passage and those of permanence, arranged around or through different patios and gardens.

The volume is hermetic towards the street, only highlighting a glazed body that acts as a lamp in the neighbourhood. The property is accessed through a hard patio with a reflecting pool, with black concrete walls that highlight the colour of the vegetation.

Once inside, a square patio with a wild green garden works as a vertical connector around which the spaces of the house are arranged. The perimeter of this courtyard can be traversed without interruption on both floors. The circulation as a space for contemplation, together with the common use areas, are connected to each other with sliding doors, allowing free passage through them and integrating as needed.

In this scheme, the ladder extended along the entire side takes a leading role. Towards the outside, like a glazed bar, and towards the inside, articulating the circulation that linearly connects the first floor with the second, until reaching the roof, where it ends in a covered terrace over the neighbourhood; further, a stone jacuzzi surrounded by vegetation, an oasis of tranquillity.
