The training center for employees of a large Spanish food chain, located is in Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia, Spain), emerges as a two-storey longitudinal northern-southern block flying above a free basement. The ongoing construction of 7,800 sqm will be completed in the future with a second enlargement phase.

The four training rooms of the center designed by Rstudio arquitectura have been connected longitudinally through a spine of services and a common hall, which can be partitioned according to the need of the moment. These teaching areas, the generating element of the project, have been designed with an orientation towards a paneled separation element, which can show or hide a rear kitchen.

The materiality of the project is externally defined by autocompectable textured concrete modulated pannels. By contrast, the interior has a warmer appearance due to the applied OSB coverings.

Description of the project by Rstudio arquitectura

The last purpose of the entire project is to become the Headquarters’ Office of a Food Distribution Company. The global project will have four parallel blocks oriented north south, which will occupy the whole 16.000sqm plot. For this reason, the hall and the common areas were oversized, in order to be big enough for the whole building. The future connection among these buildings will be through two perpendicular corridors.

From the large-scale project, we built a Classroom Building and the IT Offices, occupying an area of 7800sqm of the 16000sqm plot.

Due to the importance given by the company to their employees’ continuing training, the classrooms themshelves generate the whole space and the structure, with an impressive cantilever over the green slope, which brings natural light into the parking area, placed at the semi-basement of the building.

The classroom building is structured, on both floors, by a longitudinal spine of services and facilities. Before entering the classrooms, we find a big and shared space, which can be divided, in case of need.

Concerning the materials, we must highlight the use of cast-in-place concrete, whose surface was impressed with de trademark of the company, “the shopping trolley”, using different prefab plastic formworks. Moreover, a modular system of corten steel pieces is able to build the whole façade, forming something similar to a bar code, in honour of the fact that Mercadona was the first supermarket using this system in Spain.

The classroom itself justifies the whole project, so we designed it to the last detail. It was essential to get proximity and perfect sights from every point of the space. The materials and the perimeter skylights provide the space with warmth. Moreover, each classroom is self-sufficient, equipped with a kitchen able to disappear behind OSB boards after the trainings.

In constant search of new challenges and opportunities to continue exploring architectural processes, the team has built so different uses buildings, including a primary school in Valencia (won by public competition) and the Palmaret subway station, published worldwide. In the recent years, the office has suffered an important change related to the scale of the projects, building his bigger and most impressive buildings: a Classroom Building and Marina de Empresas. Rstudio considers flexibility as a must in his work, where projects are not just the addition of good and independent concepts, but also a whole idea of unity.
