VENTURA + LLIMONA , taller d’arquitectura i disseny presents in this occasion an interesting project for the Interpreting and Visitors’ Welcome Centre “La Antigua”, sited by the Romanesque Hermitage “La Antigua”, known as well as “The Cathedral of the Basque Hermitages”

The building projected by VENTURA + LLIMONA studio, is placed in a hillside, going into it in order to minimize the visual impact in the countryside and so that it do not interrupts or rivals the Romanesque hermitage ”La Antigua”; likewise, by using materials that respect the surroundings as wood, stone or metal, is the integration with the environment more noticeable. The plan has a museum, a restaurant, a conference centre and service facilities.

Description of project by VENTURA + LLIMONA

In February of 2009, the city council of Zumarraga (Gipuzkoa) announced a competition of ideas for the Interpreting and Visitors’ Welcome Centre of “La Antigua”. Besides the permanent exhibition, the program asked for a temporal exhibition hall, a conference centre, a restaurant, facilities and warehouse. All this spaces are especially for their uses drawn and thought for working with independence of the rest of the equipment, considering that they can be completely isolated from the rest.

The equipment has been built in an adjoining plot of the Romanesque hermitage of La Antigua, kwon also as “The Cathedral of the Basque Hermitages” and with high tourist potential. Therefore, the landscape should not be interrupted and the height of the hermitage exceeded, but with the necessary advertisement for its function as tourist equipment. That is why the visualization of the parking from the reception porch and the centre have been joined, with its 65% buried, the building goes into the mountain, minimizing the visual impact and favouring the sustainability of the building, and compensating with the contribution of the geothermal energy.

The research of a unique speech in order to integrate contests and container has involved the continuous dialogue for uniting the museographic and architectural attention. The construction plan is formalized from the regional history.

The visitors are received by porches that at the same time a large viewpoint of the town of Zumarraga and the hermitage.

The design of the building and the constructive materials alike are an interpretation of the natural elements of the region: wood, stone and iron; Zumarraga’s and La Antigua’s means of subsistence.
