The winning proposal for Europan by h3o architects: Kop Dakpark, located at the edge of the iconic Dakpark in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is currently under construction following the collaboration of the Spanish studio with the local architectural studio INBO architects.

The project proposes an innovative model of sustainable and inclusive housing that seeks to create a space for exchanges between humans and nature. The complex does not only function as accommodation, but also promotes urban biodiversity, setting a precedent in sustainable and social architecture.

The complex developed by h3o architects and INBO architects emerges as a combination of aesthetics, functionality and ecological responsibility. The building extends towards the city, providing new spaces for exchange and leisure for the community. At the same time, its zigzag galleries and wide corridors seek to encourage spontaneous encounters between neighbours, to create a strong sense of community.

The project is conceived as an ecosystem based on its urban context. It responds to it through a rocky façade made of sustainable material derived from biological compounds that act as an acoustic barrier. The presence of natural elements in courtyards and roofs encourages biodiversity in the building while generating a welcoming atmosphere in a sustainable environment.

Project description by h3o architects and INBO architects

Located at the edge of Rotterdam's iconic Dakpark, the new Kop Dakpark project, designed by INBO and h3o architecture offices, is shaping up to be an innovative model of sustainable and inclusive housing. Developed by Woonstad Rotterdam, this residential complex includes 153 affordable homes - 63 social and 90 mid-range - that not only respond to the need for housing but also integrate nature and community to improve both the urban and ecological landscape.

An award-winning vision at Europan
The Kop Dakpark project was born in 2019 as a result of h3o architects' winning proposal in the 15th edition of the Europan competition, an international platform that invites young architects and urban designers under the age of 40. Inspired by the idea of creating a shared space between humans and nature, the architects proposed a building that not only houses people, but also encourages urban biodiversity, setting a precedent in sustainable and social architecture.

In collaboration with INBO, the project then progressed towards a concrete solution that combines aesthetics, functionality and ecological responsibility, adapting to the social and architectural context of Rotterdam.

Design that connects community and nature
Kop Dakpark is strategically located between the neighbourhoods of Delfshaven and Merwe-Vierhaven, creating a bridge between natural and urban areas. With green terraces, inner courtyards and roof gardens, the building extends the Dakpark into the city, providing a haven of peace amidst the hustle and bustle. Here, both young families and older residents will find their place in a community-oriented and nature-inclusive environment. In addition, it incorporates 600 m² of commercial spaces on the ground floor, intended for restaurants and local businesses that will strengthen the community connection.

Architecture as a living ecosystem
The architectural project integrates biodiversity in an innovative way. The building is conceived as an ecosystem that responds to its context. With a smaller scale towards the Bospolder/Tussendijken neighbourhood and a metropolitan façade facing M4H, the complex reacts to its urban surroundings while welcoming nature into its design. Green façades, pergolas and gardens not only beautify the building, but also invite birds and other species, while offering residents a welcoming and sustainable environment.

The building also responds to urban noise by means of a rock façade made of sustainable material derived from biological compounds that acts as an acoustic barrier, improving comfort in its interior spaces. In addition, rooftop stormwater management systems further reduce the building’s environmental footprint, contributing to better living within the urban fabric.

A space for all generations
Kop Dakpark is designed with multigenerational living in mind. It includes adapted housing for older residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods, promoting residential mobility and ensuring that people of all ages can coexist. The zigzag galleries and wide corridors are intentionally designed to encourage spontaneous encounters between neighbours, creating a strong sense of community. Residents can enjoy conversations outside their doors or relax in the shared gardens and terraces, which offer stunning views of the city, park and harbour.

H3o Architects is a Barcelona-based architecture firm formed by Adrià Orriols, Joan Gener and Miquel Ruiz.
