Riurau House is a residential design by architect Ramón Esteve. The house will be located on a hill in the Mediterranean forest of Alicante in the Valencian Community. The house will avoid major modifications to the land that flows into the sea, adapting to the plot's unevenness to become the project's backdrop.

The project is inspired by the "riurau", a construction system originating in the Marina Alta, which is based on the construction of open arches that protect from rain and sun and allow air circulation.

Ramón Esteve's proposal will employ Mediterranean-style architecture, playing with arches and their proportions, and bringing dynamism and plasticity to the façade.

The perimeter porticos of the house project the interior program towards the exterior, allowing the landscape to be integrated into the daytime spaces and creating a spatial fluidity where the sea is the protagonist. Given its location, Casa Riurau has been conceived as a Mediterranean refuge where you can admire and enjoy the sea and its landscape.

Thanks to the colorimetry of the interior, a dialogue will be produced between the landscape and the materials. The interior elements, such as light woods or white and neutral tones, generate a warm atmosphere that contrasts with the serenity of the exterior elements.

Project description by Ramón Esteve

The Riurau House is located on a hill in a Mediterranean forest, on a plot that rises above the sea, with the horizon as a backdrop. It is a small terraced house that adapts its volume to the existing slope to avoid major modifications to the original terrain.

The project is an exercise in conceptualization and abstraction of the original riurau of the Marina Alta, a traditional construction system based on the creation of open arches that allow air circulation and protect from the sun and rain.

Sculptural design and mediterranean essence
The result is a poetic and sculptural piece that generates a dreamlike and timeless atmosphere thanks to the repetition of a sequence of arches that play with their proportions, both horizontally and vertically. The positive-negative contrast of the arches provides plasticity and dynamism to the façade. The project combines an architecture with a marked Mediterranean character with attention to detail and the sophistication of the interior.

Dialogue between materials and landscape
The house expands its proportions through the arrangement of perimeter porticos, which project the interior program onto the exterior. The spatial fluidity in the daytime rooms allows the sea to be integrated into the house, becoming its main protagonist.

A dialogue between materials and landscape is produced thanks to the luminosity of the chosen palette. The austerity of the exterior elements contrasts with the richness of the interiors, where light woods, neutral tones and white predominate, generating an atmosphere of serenity and warmth. Splashes of darker tones are added that provide sobriety and elegance, through the use of caramel oak wood, brushed champagne-coloured metals and smoked glass in a subtle golden hue.

A mediterranean refuge
Casa Riurau is conceived as a refuge where you can admire and enjoy the Mediterranean.

Ramón Esteve is an architecture studio founded in 1991 with the conviction that architecture is a global discipline. They have formed a team of professionals connected by the pursuit of a common goal: to generate creative responses in our environment by creating unique places, objects, and brands. Today, the studio is a place where architects, designers, and creatives work together to develop projects with character.

For them, architecture and design are complementary disciplines that enrich each other and, in some ways, are inseparable. They begin any project by paying attention to all its parameters to achieve a result with maximum clarity, simplicity, order, and harmony. Their identity is evident in their work. Their commitment to a job well done compels them to focus on the details and take care of the complete development of an idea. What is initially just a thought or an idea evolves with effort and perseverance to become a reality, a space, or an object.

Ramón Esteve Cambra, born in Valencia on August 25, 1964, earned his degree in architecture from the Madrid School of Architecture in 1990, and founded his studio, Ramón Esteve Estudio, the following year. In 1996, he earned his doctorate in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he served as an associate professor from 2005 to 2018.

His studio has developed a wide range of projects, including single-family homes, public healthcare, educational, and cultural projects, as well as furniture design. His most notable works include Casa Na Xemena in Ibiza (2003), the Príncipe Felipe Research Center in Valencia (2004), and the renovation of the Bombas Gens building in Valencia (2018), for which he received the Land Rover Born Award. In the field of industrial design, he has collaborated with various firms, creating collections such as Origami for Vibia (2009) and Faz for Vondom (2010). Throughout his career, he has received multiple awards, including the ADCV Award in 2011 for the LINK collection for Vibia and the Best of Year Interior Design Award in 2015 for the Ulmm Daybed for Vondom.
