Designed as a place from which to discover the world from the United Arab Emirates, the Dar Al Marefa school designed by the renowned architecture studio RCR Arquitectes offers a place for creativity, curiosity and learning for the little ones in the city of Dubai.

As if it were an urban layout, a game of solids and voids gives rise to a small city of knowledge, where different modular volumes vary in shape and height to shape the school. Thanks to this, the complex has different patios and exterior paths, which sprinkle all the interior spaces with natural light.

The programme developed by RCR Arquitectes is organised into areas differentiated by colours, depending on the needs of the students it will serve. The complex has different exchange points from which to enhance the creativity of the students, offering a place to share concerns and knowledge.

"Donated by Ibrahim Al Ghurair and his family to their local district in Dubai and designed by RCR Arquitectes, the Dar Al Marefa School provides children and staff with a visionary campus designed to stimulate discovery, learning, growth and creativity for students of all ages."

A lattice surrounds the modules that shape the complex, filtering the light that enters the interior, enriching the architectural space and thus the interior experience through a play of light and shadow that also serves as a solar protection strategy in response to the local climate.

The path marked by pergolas made of textile and metal mesh connects the different volumes of the complex, serving at the same time as external protection from solar radiation for the students and continuing the play of light and shadow that we find in the interior spaces.

"A cheerful, lively hive in a setting where everything is waiting to be discovered."

The campus is designed to maximize the learning potential of students, a complex designed to be an open space that encourages creativity, collaboration and innovation. The architecture, volumetry and composition of the different spaces of the school generate a set of shadows, accompanied by colours and shapes that, together with the facilities and the interior vegetation, build a set of intertwined patterns and winding paths, creating a lively and joyful environment that stimulates discovery, learning, growth and creativity in young students.

"A city of discovery, learning, growing, creating. For 0 to 18 years old. A school for all ages, in a shared setting. Each age discovers its own special colour, position and creativity. Each age creates its own shadows and meeting spaces. The shared services -theaterette, canteen library and sports facilities- generate paths and squares that hold others. Modulation and standardization seek an economy of resources in the production of the whole. A cheerful, lively hive in a setting where everything is waiting to be discovered."

Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta, work together since 1988 under the name RCR ARQUITECTES in Olot. They are Premio Nacional de Cultura en Arquitectura 2005 by Generalitat de Catalunya, Chevaliers de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by Republique Française in 2008, honorary members by the AIA American Institute of Architecture 2010 and International Award 2011 "Belgian Building Awards". Since 1989 are architects advisors at Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa and have been teachers of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture and Project. They have won different international competitions (the latter, the Waalsekrook media library in Belgium, the Soulages museum in France, Hofheide's crematorium in Belgium and The Edge Bussiness Bay in Dubai). They have received awards in his work among which two finalists positions in the awards of the European Union Mies Van der Rohe. Some of their awarded works have been exhibited in different events and published in several monographs.

RCR has shown the ability to think and transform that bring teamwork and the promotion of cultural initiatives from Bunka Foundation and workshops within the LAB-A in the Espacio Barberí, and have proven that it is possible to do international architecture from a rural environment, which is what has stimulated his imagination.

Following the work of RCR there is a philosophy which works for harmony between humans and nature. The most advanced technologies and materials such as steel or glass, with established rhythms and light that acts in opposition to each, are those that allow RCR this return to the essence of space that is the subject of architecture.
