The project of Tomás Amat estudio de arquitectura aims to create new spaces for meeting and communication, linking the instalation site, the nature and current uses. The building has an area of 250 sqm that can be used as a bar or kiosk-restaurant taking a public area of approximately 800 sqm.
Description of the project by Tomás Amat estudio de arquitectura
Located in the gardens of the former Tomacco Factory in Alicante, a huge cicada of 200 square meters. 250 sqm (25 meters long and 10 meters wide) serves as a kiosk-bar and restaurant within the 800 sqm outer zone from the cultural space The Cigar City. The innovate project has been developed by Tomás Amat Estudio de Arquitectura, Pablo Belda + Tomás Amat after the commissioning of the administration to provide the complex services a space permanently.
The construction, which is designed for the city and to create a new meeting point and communication in the area, has been completed with the contribution of multiple companies and institutions and it refers to the old name of the space linking it to the place, nature and its current use. It is literally an insect perched on a garden. "We made an adjustment to the space in which we live. An insect adapted to the environment, one conceived and designed specifically for the Cigar, which is not a space to use. It was not to make a normal cafe, but an exceptional work that would link with the surrounding cultural environment "says Paul Belda, project Architect.
The Cicada has the ability to adapt its size to the specific needs and through a telescopic development is able to pass from an interior space of 74 square meters to 127 square meters. Also, the structure consists of three main parts: head, body and tail. Each form is understood autonomously but forming a homogeneous whole. The design process, materiality, geometry, functionality and uses of each of these three parts of the insect, attending to different uses to which has shaped and the diverse needs of the order.
The scheme is based on a metal structure that can be seen perfectly in the simulation of the gills. To meet the "head" of the animal Tomás Amat and Pablo Belda have chosen the techno-material in glacier white Corian® that worked for thermoforming and CNC technology fits perfectly and offers almost infinite possibilities to play with light and its colors. In this area of 75 square meters is placed all the technical facilities of the building. Kitchen and store, bar and cold storage product and customer service area are not incompatible with the norm of beauty and functionality.
The center of the project reflects the body of The Cicada, where it has designed a lounge and also a winter space of 65 square meters.
Finally, the "tail" of the animal is a big piece of wood designed by architects and built by the artist Manolo García 45 meters, which brings us to the geographical area in which the cicada lives. Noble material parts are arranged along a main ropes that bind. The architects have designed a fabric, a free skin that can embrace the body and head fall back on adapting the garden space bounded to a place for the summer.
It should insist that their social and cultural interest participants encouraged companies to collaborate economically and therefore also the project proclaims its commitment in this area recording their names on CNC technique about Corian®. The study has been able to join forces for the work to be finished in a few difficult years. As head of Tomás Amat "We have achieved a public space, everything done by all. In difficult times has understood the importance of cooperation, the value of the public, by companies like Hispanitas, Finstral or DuPont, in a budget that is complete with input Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Alicante or the concessionaire interprise, El Sorell. "
