Barcelona is a diverse city, culturally and urbanistically. Built over the centuries, growing since the Middle Ages and expanding since the middle of the 19th century thanks to a layout of parallel streets perpendicular to the sea, following the Eixample plan.
Barcelona became international with photography from the 1930s. The political and demographic social changes of the time made it an interesting destination for female photographers who participated in the most innovative trends. Some came to stay, and settled in their neighborhoods; others were passing through and discovered a place to work. But all the women photographers who portrayed its streets and its people contributed to creating the image of a modern and cosmopolitan Barcelona.
