ACM Arquitectura studio (Atxu Amann, Andrés Cánovas, Nicolás Maruri) in collaboration with the AMM studio (Adelino Magalhaes) and Proap Paysagistes (Portugal) completed the project won almost 10 years ago in the Fonds Kirchberg competition for the realization of three blocks with 102 homes in the Quartier du Kiem sur le Plateau de Kirchberg, Luxembourg.

The housing complex is located in the Kiem neighbourhood, which is part of the Kirchberg district, it is located in the northeastern corner of the capital. Initially, a small agricultural municipality, which changed its destiny after becoming Luxembourg in 1952 headquarters of the European Coal and Steel Community, the forerunner of the European Union.

Its urban development is closely linked to the creation in 1961 of the Fonds d'urbanisation et d'aménagement du plateau de Kirchberg (Fund for Urbanization and Development of the Kirchberg Plateau). An institution that still supervises the urban development of the area, headquarters of important European economic, cultural and sports institutions, as well as being a residential neighbourhood.
The design proposed by Atxu Amann, Andrés Cánovas, Nicolás Maruri together with Adelino Magalhaes, has two different faces, on the one hand, the one that shows the clear and abstract city. The second looking inward, with the park and gardens, kinder hybridizing materials that reduce the scale and get closer to the gardens.

The housing complex responds to a program of typological diversity, according to the initial conditions of the competition and responding to the conditions of orientation and views, seeking the best living conditions (maximum flexibility and adaptation of its occupants) with technical and suitable materials.

Project description by Amann Cánovas Maruri + Adelino Magalhaes

The design conforms to an arrangement already defined by the zone regulations.

Two conditions are chosen in terms of the shape and materials of the buildings, the first with three blocks assume the hardness of the street, look outwards and make contact with the city, opening up to it in a firm and coherent way; are built in steel. The second condition covers another three linear blocks and adapts to the green areas designed with a language and softer materials, wood and steel, to a certain extent also glass and vegetation that represent a fundamental element for the project as a whole.

As for the houses, a certain typological diversity is committed, recognizing the original conditions of the competition. Thus, the existence of duplex apartments becomes the axis of the project, especially the building located in the centre of the plot whose situation is the most unfavourable, it consists of two stacked duplexes, the lower one related to the garden on the ground floor and the upper one tied to deck level; two houses with two gardens with different characteristics. Based on orientation and visual relations, the different types of houses are developed in order to create optimal living conditions in the required technical conditions and with high-quality materials.
