Architecture practice ESQUISSOS recover the archetype of traditional Portuguese construction in a group of semi-detached houses in Sintra, Portugal, through a contemporary approach in the way of exploring the elevations, which allows them to relate the scale of the street with the scale of the houses.

Through a different approach to the typical set of semi-detached houses, the project, designed to soften the impact on the environment, favors the connection of the different volumes with the private outdoor spaces, with the intention of providing privacy.
The BD Houses, designed by the ESQUISSOS architectural studio, represent the creation of an element that stands out in the landscape as part of a whole, not as a dissonant element, which is achieved through the subtle way of creating the elevations, based on a simple geometry and a material concordance with the houses in the area.

The project, whose white elevations dialogue with the grey of the concrete that generates the vegetable terraces that connect the interior spaces with the exterior, proposes an idea of open and versatile housing with wide entrances of natural light whose clarity creates a contrast with the warmth provided by the wooden floors, resulting in a series of spacious and cosy spaces.

Project description by ESQUISSOS

In a different approach to the typical set of twin dwellings, the proposal presents three isolated houses that favor the connection with the private exterior spaces, in an intention of privacy that allows to enjoy the outdoors comfortably.

The proposals intend to depict the archetype of traditional Portuguese architecture with a contemporary approach in the way the elevations are explored. This approach is notorious in the design of a slab that makes it possible to create a relationship between the scale of the street and the scale of the houses, mitigating the impact on the surroundings.

This gesture allows the houses to rise as a part of the landscape and not as a dissonant element, forming part of a whole.
